@xj9 #Wire is ready for use by non-geeks *now*, on all major platforms (desktop, mobile, and web). Name a single federated chat system that has clients with the #UX polish of Wire across the same range of platforms, clients that can reliably support voice/video chat and file transfer. Clients you could realistically recommend to your Grandpa who lives in a cabin in the woods as a #Skype replacement. The hard truth is neither #XMPP nor #Matrix clients are ready for primetime.

@clacke I agree with everything @sir says about #Signal, having come to pretty much the same conclusions reading most of the same old discussion threads he did. The only thing that makes my brow wrinkle is not suggesting #GNU #Ring along with #Matrix, and suggesting #Tox. @z428 @charlag @lightone there are people swimming against the tide trying to build social network web apps on XMPP (eg Movim), when I suspect it would be better to do the opposite, build chat apps for the web using #Matrix, #Zot, or #ActivityPup, and find ways to bridge between those and native XMPP apps

I've been trying out #Matrix the past couple of days: 'An open network for secure, decentralized communication'.
It's kinda like the Mastodon of messengers, or more accurately the fediverse of messengers, although calling it a #messenger is a bit of an understatement.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I think it's great! A much needed solution to an increasing problem, not sure why I held of from checking it out for so long! ๐
