@heluecht @tobias I think the time has come to request that the Freenode #Friendica room be separated from the Matrix room. Milkman's excessive and religious devotion to #Matrix and his constant complaining about lack of marketing is chasing people away.
@clacke As a frequent user of #Matrix, everything feels cobbled together. For every feature, there are multiple gotchas where it doesn't work the way people expected. (I should point out that I only use Matrix through #Riot [web, Android, iOS], so some of the half-assed DIY feel may just be the client.)
Wire seems to do less, but it feels like it does the things it does better.
@clacke For one-to-one chat / IM, #Wire > #Matrix. Most of the fiddly and confusing parts of the Riot interface are simple and understandable by normies in Wire. I don't have much data, but the IRL contacts I'm reaching now were unreachable for some time previously.
(I still prefer #XMPP, but I'm able to communicate with people on Wire that I couldn't reach after Google moved them to hangouts instead of federated XMPP.)
@lnxw48a1 As a service provider, anything I host is an endorsement, ya know? I will be saying, "hey folks, this is good stuff, and you should trust it". #Jabber has options (few as they may be), and is fairly active for such a broad field of interest and passion. Matrix could still live or die based on the personalities of a few people. I am not sure I want to put folks in that scenario, so #Matrix may mature, but it isn't like we are missing anything in the meantime. Let's see how it evolves!
@maiki Actually, I haven't installed a #Matrix Synapse server because there were a couple of upgrades which triggered resource consumption bugs a few months ago, right about the time I wanted to set one up. I'm still sitting on the sidelines waiting. (A second issue was that single-vendor thing you mentioned. It may be federated in theory, but due to the overwhelming dominance of matrix.org, in practicality it is centralized.)
@maiki I haven't seen normies use IRC since the late 1990s. You might try #Matrix instead. The "everything is a room" thing is really weird and disconcerting, but other than that, it is okay. For clients, there is Riot web, Riot Android. (I presume they have an iOS version, but I've never looked.)
Anyone know of a #matrix.org command line client that supports end to end encryption? I love the nostalgia hit of playing with weechat, but I was hoping for something more future proof.
Hey #Commons enthusiasts, I created a #Riot / #Matrix room to share anything that is legally shareable and is worth sharing, if you are interested at all: https://riot.im/app/#/room/%23share-the-commons:matrix.org Right now, it's mostly me sharing #electronicMusic that I think is good, but I'd love to see more people join :) Let's show people there is a world of beautiful artefacts beyond the All Rights Reserved.
/to @sergio /cc @xikufrancesc y !otros
