    * Reep.io *

Send out large as well as small files straight-forward, fast and more secure to a friend using P2P (peer-to-peer) technology.

Transfer files directly to another browser indeed without uploading the file to a server first. Only a "handshake" is performed.

The file will no longer be available after closing the browser window.

Reep.io is naturally open source, also.

Hey all, I need some help rethinking community calls for #opensource projects.

At Moodle, as we did at Mozilla, I've been using a public Etherpad for people to:
    - Introduce themselves
    - Contribute ideas to the project

    We're also using Zoom to:
    - Discuss things via video and audio
    - Record the call for later viewing

After a conversation with our data privacy lead today, I've got to delete the existing data we've captured in this way, and come up with a new approach.

    Any ideas? 🙃

I know it's a dangerous nit-picky audit trail to start down, but I hate it when I find out that a #charity I donate to spends money on #proprietary software. It makes me want to stop donating, because I know there's a huge amount of money being wasted on something that can and should be $0. Like, without question, $0, if not supportive of #opensource.

(And yes, I know sometimes charitable orgs get $0 proprietary software, but rarely is it $0 across the board.)

GitLab "Ultimate" and "Gold" for self hosting now free for education and open source.

This is GitLab taking this massive opportunity after Microshaft swallowed GitHub and making the best of it.

The more people are moving over now, the better their own future will be in the long run.

GitLab also make migration easier, starting the #movingtogitlab campaign with a straight-forward video etc.

GitLab is open source itself, too.

    Micro$oft is buying GitHub?

A home for countless open source projects and their source code, GitHub, has been shown interest from M$.

Thanks to GNOME Project and Debian Linux guidance has been shed on how to prepare for the mass FOSS migration. CLA (Contributor License Agreement) has been removed, features has been added.

GitLab can optionally be self hosted, too.

The impending sale of GitHub to Microsoft is another example of what happens when we fixate on #opensource IP but not equitable corporate ownership models. How *should* the repository of most free, open software projects be owned?

The Great Fork-Off Survey of 2018
      from Google Docs
No one can Fork-Off alone, but together we may be able to. The point of Mastodon has been the following: "... being a decentralized, standards-based social network with a focus on user experience and anti-abuse tools." However, we have seen pushback from developers when we request that new features be vetted for their potential for abuse, and the developers of the main Mastodon fork seem more interested in writing interesting code than in adhering to the project's commitment to a positive user experience and a reduction in harm. Many of us believe that a major fork of the project, with a strong focus on user-focused governance and community and project management, bears investigation. Due to this, we have decided to investigate forking-off of Mastodon to create a project, with a board, with greater focus on those topics. This survey is going to ask what you would be willing to provide in regards to the Fork-Off. Help will be needed for not only programming, but user experience, community management, art, design, outreach etc. etc. As such, this survey will be up for at least two weeks, to gather as many answers as possible. Anonymous responses are okay as they help show interest. Alternately, if you wish to leave your contact information so we can reach out to you for help when the time comes, that would be appreciated as well. This survey was created by @maloki @elekk.xyz ( https://elekk.xyz/@maloki ) with the help of some other users of Mastodon. The data collected in this survey will be used to gauge the interests in such a Fork-Off, the .csv file of the responses may be downloaded for analysis, and written comments may be used publicly to start further discussions (without attribution).

    Is anyone doing a #federated #OpenSource alternative to Meetup.com?

It's useful for local events, but very expensive for organisers ($15 a month for a basic events page). People pay purely because others use it, an open alternative would be 👍

Meetup's "network effect" might be overcome because it isn't a global network (e.g. someone in London is only going to care about meetups in London).

Also, an open alternative would be perfect fit for #federation, each community having its own instance.
