I just finished binging The First. I thought it was pretty good, but if you're expecting to see people on Mars, or even on their way to Mars, or anything at all happening on Mars, you may be a bit disappointed. Hopefully there will be a season two.

Today I resumed my rewatching of the 1970s UK #SciFi series #Blakes7. Some of the special FX and props make the original Star Trek look sophisticated, but I still enjoy the writing. The characters are unusual but memorable, the dialogue is unpredictable and amusing, with strong performances by the leads, even if some of the side characters are a bit B-grade at times. Some episodes have better concepts and plotting than others, but the overall story arc is compelling. #ClassicTV

Jesus H. The innocents got better as it went on, came to a pretty satisfactory conclusion, and then at the last minute they decided to give it the most depressing ending imaginable. Fuck you, Netflix.

I got First Martians for my birthday. It's made by a Polish company called Portal Games. In it, you play one of the astronauts on the first manned mission to Mars. Unsurprisingly for an indie game, it has super complex rules and approximately 5 billion different tiles and card decks. Uniquely, however, it uses a companion app which acts as the mission computer, which is a pretty cool idea. I was surprised to find that you don't need to create an account with the game company to use it, which is quite refreshing. Hopefully it's fun and the hybrid format works well.

I'm re-reading Leviathan Wakes, and TBH I like the TV version better. It's a great story, but I think the TV writers tell it better. Particularly, none of the non-POV characters in the book have much depth. I've never read beyond this book, so I'm not sure if it gets better in that regard. It's still worth a read though.

@alex for short-but-packs-a-punch, Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes. A great example of 'what if?' SciFi without jumping to space/future stuff. Packs an emotional punch.

For longer form, anything by Peter F Hamilton, but top pick would be the Commonwealth Saga (Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained). If there's a creature like that out there in our galaxy, we're all doomed ;)

@dredmorbius can I put in a vote for #DreamWidth? I love their work (fork of #LiveJournal, all #FreeCode, user-funded), although I haven't used my blog there much yet. At present it's mainly reposts of short #SciFi stories I posted to a short story subreddit. I'm intending to create a separation between more formal stuff I write on tech politics etc, which I'll continue posting on the #Disintermedia blog, and more personal opining, speculation, satire, and fiction, which will go on the DW blog.

@edebill @ElfLord is there an instance(s) particularly aimed at being a club house for #SciFi writers and fans? Could be a useful way to exchange info on good authors, blogs, forums etc and arguing about writing tools and techniques and if they're any good

@freakazoid In theory, I like the way both G+ and #Diaspora allow posts to be directed only to 'circles'/ 'aspects' containing contacts most likely to be interested. But this also creates data silos, for example if a contact only knows me as 'that #SoftwareFreedom dude', I might miss all their posts on #SciFi or #comedy, which I'm also keen to hear about. More importantly, I miss the stuff I didn't know I cared about until I read it

I just watched a "preview" version of the Han Solo prequel. This is IMHO the best #StarWars film since Ep.7 (spoiled only by a certain prequel character turning up at the end for no good reason). #RogueOne didn't do anything to make me care about any of its cartoonish characters, and #TheLastJedi ... well ... almost nothing in the plot made sense and it suffered from some *major* prequelitis, but it was ... OK. If I can, I'll pay money to see #Solo on a big screen.
