@lain Yup. I'm gonna see if I can get it working without such a thing, as my budget is $0 😅
If it doesn't work though, I'll end up cobbling a similar solution together I'm sure.
The #FreedomBone model appeals to me, though I haven't set one of those up. I suspect the neofeudal nomadic class will only grow, the easier to #selfhost the better, at least for some stuff.
Hmm. Considering #Pleroma again for a music related alt. Maybe just #selfhost on my old cubieboard that's not good for Kodi (until the crowdfunded gpu drivers are merged around 1Q2019... living in the future).
The alt is currently on #gnusocial but I picked what I thought was a reliable server back in February but it's turned out to be super slow and throwing 502s all the time and also the Android clients make me sad and the web UI is broken in Firefox mobile. That's a lot of aggravation.
You need a proxy that strips out #Javascript, ads, and other bad stuff before it hits your last-mile connection. Maybe #selfhost a #PiHole from home then connect to it from the hotel?
Most people who #selfhost have *a* server. Early on #pumpio demanded that it be the only web server running on your system. The "workaround" for this was "have a dedicated pump.io vm and proxy it to your normal server", although with some config hackery people got it to behave behind nginx.
@maiki The DIY aspect of #indieweb is an obstacle for most people who might be willing to #self-host their own online presence. If many features were available in a single add-on for #Wordpress, or for #Joomla, #Drupal, or similar CMSs, maybe there'd be more people and sites following the #POSSE model (Publish on your Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere).
