Alright, download's finished, time to run backups and get going :)
-
This isn't exactly planned downtime, but it's not anything bad. With my interest in sysadmin work I do my best to stay up-to-date on all of the major distro families, and so every few years I change my server's OS to make sure that at most I only have a few years' catching up to do. This time around will be a new experience though: first time running SuSE. Normally I restric myself to Debian based and CentOS based as well as BSDs.

At some point today socila.tekk.in will be taken down temporarily, as a heads up. I can probably be reached as tekk@quitter.no but I dunno how often I'll check it.

I feel like there's been a tone shift in "It's a Besthesda game" over the last little while, and I thik I may blame all the new rereleases. I swear "It's a Bethesda game" used to tonally mean "Enjoy the bugs, they're part of the experience" where now I get more of the feeling that it's "It's a Bethesda game so you knew it was an unstable, buggy piece of shit: why did you buy it?"

Stream went well. I now have a program that can grab RSS feeds from youtube channels and download the most recent videos from them. Need to put the pieces together, though.

Streaming some late night hacking on Twitch if people are interested, http://twitch.tv/tekktonic_

@maiyannah On one hand yeah, on the other, and maybe this is just totally on me, my student loans need to get paid. Considering how my record is so far if I'm being honest I'll probably take the first job I get, and I know full well that it'll be way less than I'm worth.
-
I have, however, gotten quite a few hits from recruiters just from having a profile that exists on dice. At least with that I know that the company's not dismissing me out of hand and have someone to reach out to to ask if I've just been dropped, not a form email 2 months after I apply saying that they've passed me over, if that.
-
For real though I'm pretty sure that applying for jobs is useless. I've been seriously applying for jobs since mid december, applying on and off since september when I was finishing school. From me actually applying I've only heard back from one company who wanted me to retake the SAT on their website and included several portions of the test which, as far as I can tell, are made to exclude people with dyslexia, which kinda turned me off.

Also sorry for the rant above, slightly frustrated.
-
Linkedin does this *to an extent* but the damn companies pull the information from linkedin then just make you fill it all in again as you double check for errors!

If I could be so bold as to make a claim: humans and push based systems are shitty for this. I should be able to define a machine readable resume, even if it means I have to deal with xml, upload it, and then companies can just do queries on that big database of people who want jobs to pull candidates. That'd just work out better for everyone.
-
@bthall My main frustration (aside from the fact that I've been fruitlessly searching for ages and literally none of my explicit applications have gotten any interest in months) is just the redundant data entry. Even when I'm applying to the same company I have to resubmit my resume, correct the data it wrongly scraped from my resume, affirm that I've never been in the military, am white, am not disabled, provide in my own words the list of skills listed in my resume etc etc.

It's pretty amazing how inefficient trying to get a job is.

One of those fun situations where wine is better at running windows programs than windows: Victoria: Revolutions is a game I've never gotten to run in Windows. It Just Works in wine, even in Windows 7 mode. Shame it's not a good game.

Related: I was playing on my #WiiU last night. Still convinced it's one of Nintendo's best consoles: glad they're porting a lot of the games to the #Switch so that people don't miss out on them.
-
@lnxw48a1 Yeah, I always knew that the xbox sold horribly, but I didn't know it was *that* bad. #MS made a big push at the start of the generation to get a foothold in japan too.

Apparently the WiiU outsold the Xbox One X in japan last christmas by selling 44 units. I love Japan sometimes.
