I legitimately wonder how further developing #postActiv is enabling persecution of minorities. As a Black person, I think the spread of #corpocentric networks in our communities is a big issue, because increasing "engagement" often means throwing extremists' messages in front of their targets, so that reactions (online fights) will ensue; and also because not every extremist is white or right-wing ... throwing everyone in one big tank spreads the sepsis everywhere. ("Septic tank" is probably a good analogy for large centralized walled-garden social sites.)

Meanwhile, smaller #socnet sites, federated together, with an easy ability for users to block problematic posters, where no site has the ability to offer much for data-miners or advertisers or police / security agencies or excessive-regulators seems to be the way to go. Maybe something like #Twister can evolve into a better alternative, but as of a few years ago, it was not there yet.

For now, IMO, we need people to use and people to host sites that run software like #GNU_Social, #postActiv, #Mastodon, #Pleroma, #Diaspora, #Friendica, and #Hubzilla (and its ever-growing list of derivatives) _instead of_ throwing everything into the hands of #Facebook, #Twitter, #Instagram, #Medium, #LinkedIn ( #LockedOut ) and so on.

The #JackDorsey TED Interview and the End of an Era

    https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-silicon-valley/jack-dorseys-ted-interview-and-the-end-of-an-era

"As Dorsey pivoted from non-answer to non-answer, it was hard not to wonder whether, despite his appearance of media-savvy calm, he wasn’t in over his head."

Interesting to see some current ideas on fedi backpropagating to #Twitter, where they either won't be implemented, or won't be enough.

@lohang I use #Twitter so rarely these days that I don't use anything except the web site. I believe #AndStatus (for Android) was able to connect to Twitter. I do not know whether that is currently true. Same for #Choqok (KDE desktop client). #TTYtter (command line client) has a successor, but I've never tried the new one.

Twitter account protection, 3 weeks later

Last month I protected my #Twitter account (see friendica.mrpetovan.com/displa…).

Since then, I haven't engaged in any stressful public wit contest on hot-button issues, mostly because I physically couldn't on Twitter, and the #Fediverse is a friendlier place for me because there's less hate-quote (sharing content one disagrees with along with a criticism of it).

On the other hand, I realized I cut a couple of people I was meaningfully interacting with on Twitter from myself because they weren't following me. This made me realize that I probably was cut off from protected accounts who follow me because I don't follow back. So I went through my protected follower list and followed them back.

So, overall protecting my account has been a marginally good thing because my online feuds were negatively affecting my sleep, but it came at the cost of a few online relationships with people I wouldn't dare to ask to follow me back even if I had another way of contacting them. friendica.mrpetovan.com/displa…

The "See less often" link on #Twitter's unsolicited content (what your contacts liked, what who they follow posted, what they posted (?!) ) seems to follow the arrow paradox of Zeno: no matter how often you click on it, you will never completely stop seeing this content.

    Distancing myself from Twitter

This past week has been rough for me on Twitter, and it was even before the white supremacist terrorist attack on a mosque in new Zealand. The fact is that I can't prevent myself from interjecting myself in online arguments, and then I have to deal with more fruitless debate that I really need.

That's why I decided today to protect my account. I will still be able to follow people and interact with my current followers, but even if I happen to reply to Someone Who's Wrong on the Internet™ (see www.xkcd.com/386/), it won't be able to degenerate into a travesty of a discussion.

This decision stems from my recent interactions with people who treat debate as a sport or worse, entertainment, and seem to like nothing more than point out to people that they are wrong according to their standards. These accounts even mention "debate", "argument" or "logic" in their bio to further the point that they aren't on Twitter to exchange ideas, just to punch people down with words.

Yes, it is a retreat move letting bad faith people "win" in a way, but you have to pick your online battles, and Twitter's core business model based on post publicity heavily favors bad faith anyway, so it would be an uphill battle even if there was an even distribution of good faith/bad faith accounts.

Besides, Twitter isn't the the only social media platform I'm on. Heck, it isn't even the main one I'm using, so this retreat feels like the next logical step before I leave this wretched platform altogether.
