    I love John Carmack. :blobmelt:

"John Carmack skeptical about efforts to build the #metaverse"

"Veteran developer calls it "a honeypot trap for architecture astronauts" during Facebook Connect keynote address"

    Quote:
"But that leaves many people pretty surprised to find out that I have been pretty actively arguing against every single metaverse effort that we have tried to spin up internally in the company, from even pre-acquisition times," Carmack says.

"I want it to exist, but I have pretty good reasons to believe that setting out to build the metaverse is not actually the best way to wind up with the metaverse."

It turns out that the reason free, open source messengers suck on iOS is that #Apple force-closes background applications unless you pay them for the privilege - which is why proprietary applications like WhatsApp, Discord and Facebook Messenger work just fine.

This means small and free actors are banned from participating.

While we're all focused on the Corona crisis the US government is quietly pushing an internet #surveillance bill that is aimed at abolishing message encryption:

We should probably pay attention to this and spread awareness even if we are not American: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/03/earn-it-bill-governments-not-so-secret-plan-scan-every-message-online

Imagine an Internet where the law required every message sent to be read by government-approved scanning software. Companies that handle such messages wouldn’t be allowed to securely encrypt them, or they’d lose legal protections that allow them to operate.Take ActionStop the Graham-Blumenthal...

#Samsung just made me jump out of my chair with their "1, 1" notification from their Find My Phone service.

They say it was a test of their Samsung services server, but here's the problem: I don't have a Samsung account registered.

Meaning the phone is always connected and they can trigger it without an account.

There's no way to really turn this service off.

What's a good way to reduce a bluray quality video into "VHS" quality using FOSS tools? :blobcatthinking2:

I'm not really looking for fake distortion and VHS artifacts but the overall 'fuzzy' effect VHS recorded SD quality television tend to have.

The most important lesson we can learn from Ghost in the Shell is to turn off your unused interfaces.

There's no reason to accept unexpected ad-hoc radio connections, parse every piece of barcode encoded data on your field of vision or process every audio data burst within earshot. That will get your cyberbrain hijacked.

An organized cyborg is a safe cyborg.

Did you know that you don't need X-Windows for graphics on Linux? Here's a few console programs that can display graphics using the framebuffer:

    - fbi
Display and manage images directly from the command line.

    - links2
A simple web browser without CSS and JS, can display inline images when switched to graphics mode with the -g param: 'links2 -g'

    - mplayer
Play videos straight from the console! Can be a little tricky.

(And yes, I used a 5:4 monitor the screenshots.)

Oh my goodness I've just learned a thing about The Matrix that causes it to make a lot more sense: In the original script the humans were used as neural network compute clusters by the Machines and as a crucial component of The Matrix itself.

Which is why humans who were aware of the simulation could control aspects of The Matrix - their minds were part of its foundation.

Unfortunately the test audiences had trouble understanding this concept so the studio changed the human role to "batteries".
