@karolat not really. I just want to extend instance-wide configuration to a block by block basis so an individual user may choose what they want. there are no planned changes to the federation support - you can continue to choose to disable the system entirely. my belief is that an instance admin has the right to configure their instance to behave however they wish, similarly it is valid to depeer instances that do not behave in the ways you want them to behave. not my business. -

however, in an open world network one should be aware that any block mechanism can be bypassed by the peer instance in any case. as long as remote profiles are cached, you have to trust all peers you federate with. this means if you are depending on an advisory-based restriction system to work, you would only want to peer with instances that agree to that system. -

I may also implement the ability to optionally restrict access for non-staff users to accounts which have blocked a user. admins will always be able to bypass any block (but such bypasses will ideally be logged using the new moderation log mechanism) -

by the way I intend to extend the block API in Pleroma to allow the end user to specify on a block-by-block basis what they want their instance to do, allowing them to choose from silently blocking (no side effects federated), side effects federated but no explicit disclosure of the block and mastodon-style federated block messages. this won't make 1.1 but it is something that I want to do, as there are cases where you may not want the blockee to know they were blocked, and other cases where you may. right now the behaviour is defined by the config file. -

@lynnesbian yes it is possible to block someone without notifying the recipient instance in Pleroma, but we both know that's not how half the people who follow you will interpret this. -

@lynnesbian that is also not accurate. but I don't wish to debate this FUD yet again.
