@feld
sure, my main point was essentially, trust but verify. that means test features that come from twitter and see if people actually like them. -

@flussence i thought about adding DNSBL support to Pleroma and then thought about how that would probably make things worse -

anyway, this is precisely what i meant a few weeks ago when i said "just because Twitter did something doesn't mean it's a good idea." this shit, right here. -

Why would I want a notification that people liked a reply to my own post? That doesn't make any fucking sense at all. It wasn't my post they interacted with, so why is Twitter trying to troll people into engaging into a war?
This must be some Jack Dorsey "INCREASE ENGAGEMENTS NOW!" bullshit because nobody in their right mind would do this. -

fyi, exited.eu person is just someone who is testing the gab software to find out more about it. what it's capabilities are, etc. -

@maloki @Laurelai
the main takeaway is simply that when it comes down to protecting our ecosystem from facing the same fate as Gab's proprietary platform, i definitely think bending freedom 0 a little makes a lot of sense in the long term.
and i mean that fate in all ways: the environment being turned into one where everyone is hateful and the ecosystem being deplatformed because of this. -

@maloki @Laurelai
yes, i agree. like i said, I support Tusky in their decision to bend freedom 0. this is a good time and place to do it.
my point is ultimately that we shouldn't say "to hell with freedom 0", because that's missing the point.
freedom 0 is important, but it shouldn't be absolute. anybody who interprets freedom 0 as absolute is interpreting it wrong.
even stallman himself would agree that freedom 0 is never to be broken is an incorrect interpretation of the four freedoms.
bending freedom 0 is fine in context. i describe it as bending instead of breaking because that's what it is. you are taking privilege to be flexible with freedom 0 for a greater good. and, it is a greater good.
and so that's why the real question is not one of whether bending freedom 0 is bad, but instead one of how we can strengthen freedom 0 so that it can bend further if need be. -

@jordyd @emsenn
an example is ActivityPub's prior love affair with placing cryptographic signatures on everything as a method of authorization.
authentication != authorization. authenticate once, authorize frequently. that's the point of OCAP.
but at least we have cleaned up much of the metadata leakage in the meantime, and blind key rotation has helped a lot too. -

@Laurelai
and so this all leads back to the question -- how do we strengthen freedom 0 while also allowing it to be bent on occasion, when it makes sense to do so?
and the answer is ultimately that we need to remove GAFAM from the equasion.
which means we need to invest in improving resources like F-Droid and Cydia.
but it also means we need to invest in improving the non-GAFAM mobile ecosystem in general.
and that's one reason why i am quite disappointed in what Purism has decided to do, because they misinterpret freedom 0. -
