yes, this is precisely what i want to do. this is precisely what Pleroma FE does, in fact (well it does a halfassed emulation of it using the CW/subject line). am i not making sense or something? -

@starwall @clarjon1 @alice
but here's the thing.
if you have a client, which is configured as such:
* Default: CW posts with any tag
* Uncollapse posts with XYZ tag
then posts that are tagged feet would still be CWed for you!
and in fact, more people would probably be willing to tag their feet! -

i need to just write a blog about this with a demo that shows what i'm getting at.
there would STILL be CWs, you would just be in control of them.
what i am saying is, if a user tags their post "alcohol" for example, then you can say CW posts that are tagged alcohol. -

@anna @clarjon1 @starwall @pollomostro
yeah the entire point is to make tagging zero cost by separating actions from underlying data.
that gives us a CW system that works for the people who want it, on their own terms -

this is my point though: if ontological tags are implemented, then they will have incentive to tag their food posts, and people who do not wish to see food posts still get their CW from that tag. -

@starwall @clarjon1
i'm pretty close to giving up here. allow me once more to explain why it needs to work the way i say it needs to work if we expect the fediverse to continue growing.
the current CW system as imposed by Mastodon punishes everyone in the ecosystem. it needs to be removed and replaced with real tagging.
this is because:
- authors have restricted flexibility in tagging their posts (you get one string)
- authors are penalized with autocollapse just because they tag their posts, which discourages them from using
- users are penalized with all-or-nothing post collapse (you can either have the CWs as they come or turn it off entirely)
ontological tagging helps by:
- making the CW system functionally robust: multiple ontological tags per post instead of a single string
- standardizing the meaning of specific tags (and providing feedback to users in clients in the form of tag suggestions)
- allowing users to define WHICH tags they wish to have collapsed or expanded (including all or nothing)
- all of this combines to make CWs zero cost, and penalizes users who do not add ontological data to their posts by giving them less discoverability
it's the same reason people are implored to add semantic web data to their web pages for better search rankings.
if you still don't get this, i'm sorry, but i give up.
the point is that ontological tags make CWs lower cost. ontological tags also help people to discover content that they are interested in.
a case study would be the "selfie" CW that is used frequently. people miss out on interaction for their selfies if they CW them. if we use ontological tagging instead, then it's up to the end user to decide if they want to see selfies or not, and people who are into sharing selfies can actually do so by following the selfie tag.
if you want to actually try this instead of being close minded and telling us how it won't work, try signing up for a diaspora account. this proposal is directly modelled after the work done in diaspora where it has been used to *great success*
