I've come to find that I've completely over-valued the concept of "knowing your audience".
I'm now of a mind that everyone should be your audience, and the information you share should have sufficient "resolution" to meet the audience's level of desire.
To put it another way, the information you share should be rich enough that the audience can decide how deep they want to go instead of trying to "fit" the depth to a specific audience.

Something that was pointed out to me just a few days ago is that critical thinking is *portable*, in that it can be applied to domains that you don't have any/much knowledge in to determine whether or not the data/source are worth trusting.
This is surprisingly effective as a noise filter for the majority of information that is propagated along social network lines (as well as legacy media).
So I figure this is a good place to start :)
