@tootbrute Very true. The general public only finds out about big things once they become big. They don't see all the time spent grinding against a tool that doesn't work yet. Hell, in my first quarter in uni, 3 other people and I spent about 70 hours each on a very small project and barely managed to get it up and running. @mooshoe
Chris Webber, the co-editor of ActivityPub (which enables Mastodon, Pleroma, Peertube, etc.) is inventing the next generation protocol for decentralized social games & online collaboration.
It is really important work.
I am convinced that there are institutions out there that would give him a grant to work on this.
Foundations? Boston-area universities? If you know of one, please consider nominating him!
@strypey In truth, I also saw it once while browsing, but didn't pay it any mind. But then I saw your toot and got curious. I wasn't aware of what it really was, since I originally had the (mistaken) impression that the database would be closed off like that of many other apps. Rather foolish of me given that the other apps were proprietary.
hey. i'm a trans/nb, disabled, US navy veteran with years of experience in system administration, as well as a good chunk of github effort influencing mastodon's early growth period in user experience and featureset.
ive got next month's rent, and virtually nothing more to live off of afterward.
i'm scared. i've not been able to find a job in the civilian world, despite my best efforts.
maybe point me in the right direction, or point me out to somebody you know?
please boost, or maybe hire me on a cheap commission to appraise your tech, for any reason, for a negotiable price. I just want to work for pay, enough to survive.
anything helps, including boosts.
dm if you just wanna send me money, instead, if that's easier for you.
@brandon How'd you find out then? Maybe they switched protocol? At least in Costa Rica, the government does tend to unilaterally change procedures without anybody knowing. ๐
