I don't celebrate xmas. I'm not religious so that aspect is out the window, I absolutely loathe the commercialism, and I don't like the notion that it's this one special day where you let friends and family know you love them, because that should be *every* day. I spend the whole year being generous when I can and giving people gifts when I can.

So, happy Monday. If you have to suffer through bullshit today, I'm sorry, I hope it's over quickly. Otherwise, I hope your Monday is a cool one. :)

Provides some insight into how governments and companies like Facebook are thinking about encryption. There's a lot of euphemistic and contradictory language, but from the government point of view it seems pretty clear that the intention is to work with companies to ensure they provide exploits and also to use ISPs to deliver those exploits so that they "don't break encryption but work around it".

@vfrmedia @megfault The LoRa descriptions I've seen are very low power and low bandwidth, in the order of about 2 bits per second. That would be real slow appearing text, like in the movies.

"A network of fixed remote monitoring and direction-finding (RMDF) systems has been established at strategic locations around the UK. These stations can be controlled from Baldock and provide monitoring and direction finding capabilities which are shared with other Ofcom users. When networked together, the stations provide accurate position-fixing capabilities."

@megfault The metadata defense methods that I know of so far are the onion method (layered encryption) or the broadcast method (everyone receives the message, only the intended recipient can decrypt it).

@megfault Well, municipal mesh might go some of the way towards achieving that. Today if I want to send a message from one side of a city to another chances are that it will go through undersea cables and other choke points which are being bulk collected by multiple governments and corporations. Local communication with a mesh might not go through any such choke points.

But it doesn't actually solve the problem, just raises the stakes. The surveillance state would need more monitoring more densely embedded into the networks.

@jehu Living labour can be replaced by fixed labour, but this then creates a problem for the pilots of the accumulation machine. The surplus population outside of Capital needs to be prevented from re-entering or meddling with the process, so this requires a growing control society in order for homeostasis to happen.

In the simplest case this could mean eliminationism, but that's high risk since there is no assurance against Capital destruction or even Capital overthrow. More likely is a strategy of containment.
