I was an old skool raver in early 90s England - we got our whistles, lanyards etc from exactly the same places referees got them (traditional sports and outdoor goods shops) as well as things like fishing hats which were popular back then.

From memory there wasn't much rainbow imagery on the rave scene, simply because LGBT+ folk were always a major part of the UK dance music scene from the mid 80s onwards and did not really drift apart until the mid-late 1990s..

this is my situation too -
I don't write "big software" (mostly small scripts) and my projects often involve hardware interfacing to specialist equipment and often I have to redact bits of code to avoid breaching confidentiality/security (because of site specific things, eg this script would have contained telephone numbers) >>

Apparently the British film industry has a shortage of skilled workers (camera operators, skilled trades for set building) and is even trying to move away from the traditional nepotism which kept these jobs within certain families / communities. This may well be true - but skilled trade workers (especially outside London and SE) can often get full time secure salaried jobs with (fairly) sensible hours, rather than have to hustle for sporadic freelance work..

Having been monitoring in parallel political discourse around Article 13 *and* the development of "Youtuber/social media influencer" culture of (mostly) younger Germans there seems to be a massive culture/generation gap within the country (maybe more so than UK?).

What is worse is some politicians who want to destroy the social media aren't old farts, they are younger than I am (but maybe did not take part in Gen X youth subcultures at all)

A survey from UK exposes wildly excessive use of unpaid interns in arts, media and even retail, something which has been going on for decades here and is of course now skewing the demographics of those who do eventually get paying jobs in these sectors..

(the only place I think unpaid work experience is tolerable is for a week or two at high school aged <16, not for young adults)

@natecull even with full knowledge of the German music industry and its desires to jealously guard copyright, its slightly jarring to watch a youtube and find its available in UK one week but not the next, and to look at the bit below and see about 6 rights organisations all scrabbling like rats to get a fraction of a euro cent for music that is 30-40 years old.

Worse is to see it happen with rave music tracks of 1990s when part of the subculture was no one gave a shit about copyright..

@neil its even more short sighted as a return to sustainable manufacturing within Europe if done well could bring *together* native young adults who have practical skills but aren't as academic who currently struggle to get employment, as well as the various migrant communities. This has all been done before, and it worked fairly well!

@neil I suspect theres a worse reason for the opposition from UK, DE and IT than just Euroscepticism (ofc bad in itself!)

All 3 countries have remnants of a once thriving manufacturing industry that has let itself become dependent on producing cheap disposable crap (basically final assembly of items sourced from lower labour cost countries) and there is no will from profit driven companies and neoliberal governments to (re)invest in training and support economies based on repair/reuse..

    Anyone here in Köln/Cologne?

today there was emergency warning via NINA-App from the Fire Brigade about a "Geruchbelästigung", which I think is what we would call in Britain a "bloody awful pong" 😆

apparently there is no major risk to health and the warning has now been removed (probably likely to be caused by drains being blocked up somewhere..)

random science / #meteorology thought : it must be possible to use a years worth of toots to gather reliable (if anecdotal) data on #weather in Europe, USA and beyond- many people here carry out outdoor activity of some kind (cycling, wandering etc) and toot about weather conditions.

(inspired by a toot of mine from last year being boosted when I was up on a roof to inspect a community radio transmitter and it had already become quite cold by night, whereas start of Sep 2017 was warm..)

@paulfree14 when I used birbsite over a year ago, some German lad tweeted a link which had a list of a far larger number of victims of hard right aggression (not just that cell), going back as far as 1991 rather than 2000s and pointing out that some victims weren't only of foreign ancestry but Germans too especially homeless people.

Alas, I did not save this link (it was from a fairly reputable looking left leaning news site). Do you have it anywhere?

@resist_berlin @cypnk I often watch Die Sendung mit der Maus both to practise my German and for the technical/aesthetic quality of the Sachgeschichten - Armin still uses Arriflex 16mm cameras for his segments (especially the slow motion footage), but digital editing (hence no scratches/dust on the film) whereas Christoph uses digital equipment throughout (I noticed this on a behind the scenes doku)..

I have been working in tech for near 30 years, and literally the only people I encounter who *genuinely* believe in FOSS as a wider social force for good (not simply yet another aspect of profit making business) seem to be found on Mastodon (and a great number of them on social.coop instance, although thats to be expected)
