Oh look at the time, it's C and C++ bashing again. Uh people, the biggest memory unsafeness pitfalls in C++ are perfectly avoidable if you just use a modern style of C++ and follow a few simple, machine checkable, rules. In particular if you get in the habit of treating the new and delete keywords as red flags (replacements make_unique / make_shared and destruction at end of scope) it becomes really easy to not have dangling pointers.

@purplehippo @maiyannah So that you need to give them more real monies because you're running out of pretend money. I'm kinda surprised actually they don't have some kind of weird ass Valve coin to break the psychological connection with real money so you spend it more easily.

@maiyannah Cause gamification. And Steam takes a percentage of each card sold (it's somewhere around 15-20% I think) so more card sales means more money for them.

Gotta wonder, is there any point to steam trading cards other than being able to close an 8 cent gap between your wallet and the price of the game you want to buy? Why on earth do people spend real money collecting those? I mean, I can understand MtG cards but these are completely useless virtual cards.

@maiyannah For the record I'm not saying you shouldn't make the comparison but that I am not (implicitly) making it by agreeing with you on some points.

@maiyannah Minor nitpick (not that I agree with the comparison in terms of severity, few things compare to the nazi's no matter how hard they try): I think Sturmabteilung (SA) would be the more apt than Schutzstaffel (SS), the SA was the bunch of thugs (the brown shirts) beating people up and doing political intimidation.

@maiyannah Had to look that one up. Seems like a bunch of people you really don't want to mess with.

So if I understand British politics correctly Brexit means Brexit but the question is whether Brexit means Maxit. I don't know whether I should hope it does because May or not because it would likely mean a no-deal brexit and that's worse for the economy of the Netherlands.

@maiyannah Most Western soldiers really love peace, so much that they're willing to die to protect it.

Playing around with Racket. I think what the Racket people fundamentally got right is its focus. The strength of lisps comes mostly from being able to combine a lot of different programming styles in a single semi-coherent framework (which is great for learning) and, related, being able to create specialized languages easily (which is great for CS language experimentation).
Ultimately I don't think any lisp will ever become a truly popular language because the same quality of flexibility that makes it great for teaching and computer science will in a larger group inevitably result in a mess of person-specific mini-languages. Lisps are kind of the anti-Go in that way.

@camoceltic I once doubt it cheap hoping it'd be a nice parkour game with some exploration, finding your routes, etc. But it's too linear and heavy on the enemies for me. IMHO the parkour/platforming pieces of Metroid Prime are actually better at getting the right feeling of speed and flow than Mirror's Edge.

Playing around with Racket. Discovered one major downsides of lisps already: there is officially very little syntax but people use indentation patterns for syntax, however editors suck at detecting the right indentation pattern because that depends on the semantics of the code.

@purplehippo @maiyannah I live in a sane country. So  don't get to vote in US elections. Feels so good. :)

modulecounts .com is kinda interesting to see how vibrant language ecosystems are. Most of it is what you'd expect. Java, C#, Python and PHP are in the same order of magnitude when it comes to daily growth. But JS (node) really jumps out with more than 4 times as much as the next biggest (Java). Guess we now know what npm small package culture is good for: stat inflation. :) (Stats for some languages are a bit misleading the other way though, some languages like Go don't have a big central package index)

@purplehippo It'd be nice if they could just admit they're partly a porn store or even better, launch a porn store and put all the "risque" games in there. Easier to find for those who want it, easier to avoid crappy hentai games for those don't want it. And if they make a separate store they might actually get decent eroge or something in there.
