@logout Haha, “make CB great again”. Print up the hats and stickers and I think you’ll have a movement!

I’m familiar with PMR, and a bit envious, as the analogous FRS/GMRS doesn’t enjoy the same developed popularity as in EU. They tend to be used for small gatherings only incidentally, with some emcomm on GMRS. No contests that I know... Most serious SOTA types go to 2m/70cm ham here quickly. 300km on PMR is astounding! You did that QSO?

@logout That must have been quite a sea change when CB was permitted! (I have some idea how that can be viz a viz a communist regime...) I have heard and read that CB in USA and Canada used to be different, that in the 70’s it had the character of social media, but likewise fell to anonymous toxicity.

CB is a good idea to have available, natch. It’s too bad the rich on air culture you describe has become moribund. Do you think a retro or localist movement might revive it?

@Shufei Thanks for the info! Here in Czech Republic CB became legal in the middle of 90's, before that in the era of communism nobody could own a transceiver without being HAM. People created CB clubs with dozens and dozens of members, magazines were printed, conventions held, regular portables and contests almost every month. It was a little HAM world available for everyone. Most people however used CB just to chat and most of these are gone.
Compare log from 2001 and 2019:

    https://drive.cbdx.cz/xdenik4090.ht0m

The 2019 is from one of the biggest local CB contests, the 2001 was just an usual weekend.

@logout An interesting exception to my harsh rating is SSB. I’ve had a few worthy interactions on the higher bands where occasionally SSB ragchewers haunt. CB is not my usual milieu otherwise. It was funny the first time I had a passing lorry driver approve my features on air and was surprised I could tender a jaunty reply. But it got old and seedy quickly. Aside from passing road block info, I thus rarely peep up. But many other ears do also listen this way.

@logout I’ve not tried it abroad, but CB (11m) has largely been a cesspit across North America as long as I have used it. But it is still quite widely deployed, insofar as much cargo is shipped by highway rather than rail. So if nothing else, it behooves the continental traveller to keep trucker channel 19 in one’s radio memory for exigencies. There still are DX “skip talkers”, but of very poor operator quality. I heaps prefer 40m to that; most hams here are wont to concur.

@garfiald Alright, and somewhat disappointing, but heaps thanks all the same for the education! I was hoping there was some way it was demonstrably a Tristram and Isulda detour, though, or had some other interesting influences. But maybe the chap had a similar heritage born of a location with Gaulish overlaid by migration era Germanic...

    Thanks!

@ND3JR Callcentric has their Dollar Unlimited (incoming) plan. You can only pick from certain area codes though. In the age of cellphones that won't much matter. You'll then need an outgoing plan. If you pick the cheapest one (120 min) your total bill will be under $5.

voip.ms pricing is similar, though metered slightly differently. You can likely end up with a cheaper bill, but they don't include as many freebies (eg: you pay extra for a number to call other customers via SIP).

@Shufei @ND3JR Check out https://allstarlink.org/ . It's a radio linking system based on an older version of Asterisk. I don't know the specifics on how to configure it, but it almost certainly has the autopatch stuff in there.

@trashHeap @cstanhope It ever was thus, if often but at heart.

9/11 ripped the fig-leaf of cowboy chivalry off the empire. At that moment, in the puerile paradigm of that mythos, America had the choice to take up with more determination either the “white hat” or the “black hat”. It should be indubitably apparent by now that most Americans have starkly chosen to wear the latter.

@garfiald What was the place of Cornish people in medieval French poetry at the time? I only vaguely am familiar with the Arthurian connotations such a nationality might mean... But is there any Brythonic substrate to this tale?

Also, is this poem in French or Provenćal?

    Thanks.

@Shufei If it wasn't for someone here on the Fediverse pointing me to this, I'm sure I'd be completely lost:

    http://www.asteriskdocs.org/en/3rd_Edition/asterisk-book-html/asterisk-book.html

As it is I'm going through the book, learning as I go & implementing the examples when I can. It's still a lot to take in, though.

My ultimate plan is to get everything working internally, then use a SIP trunk provider to be able to call outside my network. I won't use it for ham radio
