I understand that requiring enormous masses of volunteer moderators is a problem. I've argued at length against the concept of decentralization of social media due to the misbehavior of bad actors, *because* of the problems of volunteers and inadequate coordination.

But, to be specifically helpful: A united servers of the fediverse. Equal rules on banning and report management. Similar to extradition treaties. Whitelist who gets in. (cont)

the essence of this business is that social media is a civil society forum - *particularly* the freewheeling approach of Twitter & its children where you can roll up and talk to anyone, and everyone is shouting loudly, with almost no private rooms. And, if you have a Mass of people on it, you wind up really and truly needing an above board & transparent punishment system.

this is a hill I am willing to argue on for a long time.

@dennis_reichel @Gargron I do think it matters. An administrator should not be able to deliver unilateral negative effects without a juridical recourse agreed upon by the community. Even if it's something that needs immediate addressing, the accused needs to have recourse. Evidence needs to be held and presented if recourse is requested.

This is basic organization governance & management stuff here.

@Shutsumon do you mean an app on your phone? does it look up your current location? does it find spots near your current location? would text descriptions suffice? do you want images? would having it on a laptop suffice? Do you want a website?

Each of those answers gives a shading to the original question, along with changing the difficulty between "heh, not hard" and "wheweee, that's a lot of work".

@Gargron Apologies; I frankly didn't follow that closely. I maintain my point, but I also say the same thing about any reasonably popular instance.

IMO public trials are public for a reason....

@Gargron You need a public governance process with public recourse, not hordes of shadowy figures stabbing each other via the mod system. Mastodon.social needs not to be subject to a moderator's unilateral private decisions.

@rfox Interesting. My usual question here is "how does this accomplish something besides naming it. I.e., what theorems can we generate now from this observation?

(I do not subscribe to the concept that math must be practical, but it it is nice to have an application)
