CamScanner was updated to include an advertising library that included a trojan dropper recently. It *was* a legit Android app (I used it in the past) but it seems that ship has sailed.
- I have run Arch as a desktop - I have run various forms of Ubuntu as a desktop - I have run OSX as a desktop - I have run Windows as a desktop - I've built and managed servers running FreeBSD and various flavors of Linux - I've built a router using Stage1 Gentoo and it was about as powerful as pfSense is today
I've spent enough time with Windows, OSX and Linux desktop environments to be able to say it's nearly an even split between the 3. Linux/Windows are both things I've run as recently as TODAY.
I pay for a number of services, e-mail and Office365 come to mind.
I self host even more services, NextCloud, Pleroma, Syncthing, Wallabag, TT-RSS ,Matrix, XMPP and more come to mind.
Driving by and telling me my choices for hardware/software layout are "dumb" or "stupid" or anything in that vein is gonna get ya blocked.
Asking why and having decent discourse where we can explore other options is fine. I may even suggest a *different* approach than mine if asked.
I've been at this game a looooooong time. I know what I need and how my mind works.
Blanket telling me I'm doing it wrong is just fucking mean.
I optimize for what *I* need. Save your holier than thou bullshit for judgement day.
Thanks to another Fedi user I have what amounts to a-gps on my portable lollipop build
I also found some stand offs that give this naked build a bit of additional support.
Even better? I discovered I can shove all this shit into my Tenba BYOB 9 Insert with room to spare (kinda)
I now have a cloud with a padded case and handle. What's better is I can stuff it into the top of BOTH of my grab and go back packs w/o any additional hassles for 8-12 hours of on the go ๐ญ โ๏ธ
I'm waiting on some final pieces/parts to arrive and will write all this up nice and neat like once I have a final setup that won't get you pulled out of a security line complete.
The Plume developers have been an AMAZING group of humans.
They've been amazingly supportive, helpful and beautiful humans.
I'm clearly doing things they were not expecting (building Plume inside Docker on various arm platforms) and they have helped and supported despite the unofficial nature of what I've been trying to accomplish.
THAT is amazing.
If you are looking for a great Open Source Project, look at theirs.
They know Tumblr has shot themselves and is going to be circling the drain really really really soon.
Trouble is they can't self-host (spoons/accessibility/knowledge gaps) and/or are waiting on other, centralized services to come online and displace Tumblr.
Now is our time to shine.
Let's put our weight behind the amazing OSS projects geared towards long-form posts that speak ActivityPub as well as projects like FreedomBone, FreedomBox, Yunohost, Lollipop Cloud and others that reduce barriers to entry and help with accessibility of self-hosted content and giving an individual control of their destiny again.
Even jumping into a community to ask questions or provide feedback is support.
It takes a community to have a successful project and everyone contributes in their own way. From Q&A to docs to code. ALL are valid contributions.
Pleroma wants to empower communities and users by building a great platform for "the socials" that has a STRONG focus on safety (I promise, there are some amazing features like MRF which are not widely known or understood). Think bulletin boards / forums in a very very broad sense.
Pixelfed is slowly building federation support to take on Instagram
Plume is a blogging engine that leverages the network for comments and sharing of content (Tumblr alternative)
PeerTube is hoping to take on YouTube
FunkWhale is inspired by grooveshark and wants you to get your groove going
PInafore is a lean, mean UI that's pretty
Halcyon is a tweet deck alternative
we have a couple CLI UI's as well
We have some tools that auto-delete posts after a timeout
We have some tools that cross post rss feed articles as posts
We have a LOT of developers from ALL over that are doing some really cool things.
This network isn't just a singular instance OR experience. It's the human condition of many views upon a topic expressed in a technical form.
I need to loop around to sort out a VPN kill switch.
if you have some spoons and access to an arm64v8 computer (of any form) I could use some help with plume. im seeing some odd build errors and have no real experience with rust... it looks like one of the dependencies has a nested dependency on a no longer supported library that's broken on arm64v8 and unlikely to receive a fix.
with our tumblr expats having a federated blog that is pre built for arm64v8 (raspberry pi 3, orange pi, aws, scaleway, others) is a HUGE deal
if we can work together as a community to nail this.... the federverse gains an important option for self hosting.
the plume docs are solid but builds for docker are a pain (I have notes to share). lets build this out shall we?
Matrix is probably the best replacement for Discord if you leverage the Community and persistent room features.
Trouble is : Discord *organizes* things sooooooooo much better.
Matrix is also a huge PITA to self-host properly.
Discord is a *really good choice*.
I like FOSS to a dangerous level but hot damn @maloki has done a fantastic job structuring their discord and I just can't find a good way to make a FOSS solution as robust. I can get reasonably close but not 100%.
