@FarhanYusufzai except that of all the names in that list, #GNU is the one that initiated the project of creating a libre UNIX, and provided the system that Linus was able to develop his kernel against. #Linux (the kernel or the OS) wouldn't exist without GNU. Both existed before Red Hat existed, before BSD was libre, and before Oracle or Intel were involved.

@FarhanYusufzai If Stallman was the only person who used the GNU/Linux naming convention, that argument might make sense. But see the link in my last post.

@tootbrute I've never found #LXDE to be satisfactory as a day-to-day desktop, and I've found what I consider to be a better option. See:

@havlatobias have you tried #Trisquel 8.0 on your Acer? I run it on the Acer Aspire One I bought in 2010, and it runs really smoothly. Trisquel is an FSF-endorsed distro based off Ubuntu, and 8.0 is based off 16.04, but with a Mate desktop. Mate is just as user-friendly as #GNOME #Flashback but uses a fraction of the resources. #AA1

    > I don't like the approach of trying to fix this from a "consumer" side

Agreed. Which is why guilt-tripping people about the necessary self-defence practice of using an #Adblocker is a) mean, and b) misses the point.

@deathmlem thanks for sharing your experiences. #LXDE is a dead project since merging with #RazorQT to form #LXQT. Besides which, I've found that #Mate uses about the same amount of system resources, while providing a much smoother #UX. #Debian is definitely a contender:

@tootbrute I don't trust #Ubuntu, and although I haven't tried it since they abandoned their #Unity bloatware, I used to find it unsuitable for any device older than about 2 years.

@librelounge just listened to the #LibreGaming episode. Good stuff! Do you folks know if anyone does a podcast specifically about libre gaming? I would definitely subscribe to that. If not, that might be something I could create ...

@z428 Isn't that a bit like saying that using condoms is ignoring the smoke of sexually transmitted diseases, and make fighting those diseases someone else's problem? Free access to music, movies, and other cultural works is definitely parts of the benefits the net has brought humanity. We agree that new funding models are needed, but we're not going to agree that the legacy media industries have the moral high ground here.

@z428 I think we're talking past each other. I'm objecting to web ads and tracking. I have no problem with charging users for premium services, like #Pinboard.in, the new #FlickR, #Loomio, and so on. Also Vulture Capitalists are the people who use capital as a tool to extract value from online service companies, as described by #DougRushkoff in his #ThrowingRocks book, not the people running the services.

@HerraBRE what kind of tax regime is "normal" depends totally on where you live ;) Outside of a few Scandinavian countries, I believe the #NeoLiberal tax regime I describe is currently "normal taxes" in most places. I'd love to learn that I'm wrong about that, because it sucks.

    > the poor will foot the bill

How? They can just keep buying the cheapest products available, but their custom will mostly shift to companies with eco-friendly packaging, durable, repairable products etc.

@ryanlittlefield yeah, some of their records are better than others. It's often the sort of thing that grows on people with multiple listens. The other kiwi band you might like is Snapper, also on Flying Nun.
