    @pootz another anecdote, even while living in welfare, I would sometimed pay a bit more for greater ethical value (organic, #FairTrade etc). Joining food coops often allowed me to get the same goods at the price of the less ethical ones. So it vastly increased the chances more ethical suppliers would get my food money. The #FreeShop fork idea is about reducing the mental transaction costs of financially supporting #FreeCode dev, not the $ costs, otherwise the same principle is at work

    @pootz I will give coins to buskers and sometimes beggars, I'll even go out of my way to do so. But I almost never give donations over the net. Why? A big part of it is that all the current styles of online payment dance involve more steps than I can be bothered learning. Paying on the street involves 3 simple steps, every time,
    1) take coins from wallet
    2) go to busking hat
    3) drop coins in
    Making payments simpler makes them more likely. Thus, my proposal to put #Taler in repo app

    @strypey
    I want a voluntary usage monitor / automatic donation system. Like a client-side patreon. Don't send my usage data anywhere but tally up what I rely on, including backend libraries, then let me review the breakdown and adjust as desired, and then have donation links for all the projects and let me set a bound of "donate x amount each timeframe" with it divyed up by the breakdown I signed off on for that analysis span.

    @feonixrift that's a cool idea too. My follow up post (right after that one) went to a subscription system based on client-side stats too. But with the payments automated. The only part I need or want to manually control is how much money I put in the pool to be divided up over a given timeframe.

    @pootz In fact,
    F-Droid itself could be in the #FreeShop repo, so users could pay to support their work, and use it if there's apps they want but can't afford to install via FreeShop

    @pootz oh we're totally on the same page about not restricting access. Notice my proposal was for a *fork* of F-Droid, so broke users could carry on using the original just as it is. Just the same way right now I can choose to use ElementaryOS and pay for updates, or just keeping using distros with no payment system for updates.

    @Blort it helped to tell myself that going to Disneyland is like dropping acid; once you've committed to an all day pass, there's no going back, and the only way to avoid a bad to is to relax into it, and enjoy the ride ;-)

    @lj_writes honestly, I think it's just the caffeine. I can go camping for weeks without any devices and I'm happy as Larry ... just as long as I get my morning cuppa ;-)

    @Blort LOL. I actually ended up having fun when I got caffeinated, turned out my frustrated activist subroutines, and went on some rides. If Doctorow's 'Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom'was real, both the Pirates of the Carribbean and Tron rides would deserve to be in that park.

    On reflection, the thing I found just before the net connection was my first cup of tea for the day. I think what I'm actually addicted to is caffeine, and the fatigue and grumpiness were both withdrawal symptoms of that.

    Goes to a theme park feeling fatigued and funky. Finds a cafe with comfy booths, finds a free WiFi connection, gets online. Feels instantly better. Am I addicted?

    @Angle apparently another thing that tend to precede collapse is a wave of obsessive stadium building. Make of that what you will. FWIW I think started long before the Orange Menace (think Reagan or even Nixon) but there's something about putting a 2 y.o in a man suit in charge of the whole country that makes the collapse of the US empire very hard to ignore.

    @Angle I haven't tried #Duolingo but I just installed #AnkiDroid from F-Droid for language-leaning flash cards. It uses as open format so in theory card decks could be made for learning anything you want. The Anki service it connects to is non-free but it's possible to connect to an alternative hub for sharing card decks.

    There's something profoundly depressing about watching the people of an ancient eastern civilisation getting excited by a cartoonish simulacra of 1950s USA. The mere disappointment is turned to torture by the unrelenting soundtrack of kitchy Christmas songs, and the workers being forced to hang out in the rain and tell everyone to "have a magical day". Shanghai Disney, gotta love it. Yes I'm cynical, #GetOffMyLawn

    No idea, I've never tried #Discord, but I know dedicated gamers who hangs out there a lot. I'd guess that as in most cases of #DataFarm vs. #FreeNetworkService, it's a case of the datafarm having a more pleasing #UX.

    On average we made about the same income on the pay-what-you-want-day as any other day. We actually talked about making it an everyday thing, and that's why we ran the experiment. But I suspect that if didn't have the standard hourly rate for people to use as a yardstick to decide what to pay, a) it would have been much more confusing for customers, and b) I don't think we would have made as much from pure donations with no such yardstick.

    @LWFlouisa I wanted to clarify what I mean by "socialist" here. I mean that Free Software folks are in favour of sharing, commons, and collective solutions that aren't totalitarian governments (state *or* corporate), so we tend to be somewhere on the left *economically*. But being folks who explain our issue as "free-as-in-speech", we are also #CivilLibertarians. So we have a foot in each camp, which is what I meant by "centrist" in the earlier post. I'd say you're probably one of us ;)
