@LPS@deadsuperhero ok, so it turns out Mastodon.host is blocked by the great firewall. Both share.tube and Vidcommons.org are not, but a search for "paywall" on them comes up empty. Is this because of the time it takes for awareness of new videos to propagate across the PT network, or those instances not being federated with the one on mastodon.host, or is it user error on my part?
@LWFlouisa ok. If you request an account on the Disroot forum, and mention that you're willing to help with #UX improvement, they might make an exception for you?
@LWFlouisa@bob but considering the work Hubzilla needs more is mainly improving #UX, you wouldn't necessarily need to be fluent in the back-end language to help.
@LWFlouisa these issues are complicated, and your posts bring up at least two distinct sets of issues; a) editorial/moderation policy, and b) platform politics. I could easily write a long blog post on each of theses, if not a book. I recommend Ours To Hack And Own for detailed discussions of the latter, but I'm not sure if there's a good book on balancing free speech with incentivizing respectful online discourse and minimizing abuse and bullying. A gap in the market?
@clacke just had a look. Saw a headline that says IBM is acquiring Red Hat *facepalm*. This in the wake of MS buying GH. Finding effective ways to coordinate and *fund* commons development outside corporate control has never been more urgent #PlatformCooperatives
The #FreeMusicArchive is facing a funding crisis, and at this point, will be shutting down on Dec 1. If you, or your organisation, can help keep the #FMA alive, please contact them today! While their full collection and an archive of the site will be available on #Archive.org, it would be a real shame if the live site, and its community of curators, was lost to the web: http://freemusicarchive.org/member/cheyenne_h/blog/Big_Changes_Ahead_for_FMA
@switchingsocial@funkwhale it's also so people can help to financially support musicians who release their music under CC licenses, as well as the sites that promote them. They can't compete with artists and music sites that use #ARR copyright if nobody gives them money, even though you don't have to. Think how it would empower the commons of we all put $5 a week into a fund to pay artists whose #CC works we enjoy.
@LWFlouisa Mike seems to have moved on to developing #Osada and #Zap, so I'm not sure who the active maintainers of #Hubzilla are these days. Any idea @bob ?
@LWFlouisa check out the #Disroot instance of Hubzilla. Not sure if it's out of beta yet, but they are actively working on improving the #UX, and feeding those experiences back upstream: https://hub.disroot.org/
Does anyone know if there's a #CC licensed database like the Database of #OpenAccess Journals, but listing all academic journals, and any relevants information about them that might be useful in evaluating any papers they publish? https://doaj.org/
