@mooshoe @kelbot I think a lot of this is hard to know from the outside. Take your Android example:
You tell a plausible story of wanting to keep it open, but getting pressure to close it.
Here's another plausible story: When it had 0% market share, they were willing to make it open to gain acceptance from hardware folks. As its market share has climbed higher, they've had the leverage to make it more and more closed, as they'd wanted.
