@mooshoe @kelbot I think a lot of this is hard to know from the outside. Take your Android example:

You tell a plausible story of wanting to keep it open, but getting pressure to close it.

Here's another plausible story: When it had 0% market share, they were willing to make it open to gain acceptance from hardware folks. As its market share has climbed higher, they've had the leverage to make it more and more closed, as they'd wanted.

Which story is true? Hard to tell from the outside

Meta-level point: Without getting into the merits of issue at hand, the claim "Company X is motivated purely by profit" != the claim "every employee at Co. X is greedy"

First—even though companies are made of people—companies are also separate entities that (acting through their leadership) can take profit-motivated actions even if many people aren't profit motivated.

Second, being motivated to make money for the shareholders is very different from being (personally) greedy
