I finished my stint as a Mozilla Fellow and now I'm relaunching my Patreon with a focus on, well, fixing social media.

This means I'm going to continue my concerted work trying to make the fediverse a better place, in the form of best practice guides for running instances, external advocacy, and technical tutorials and training so that more people can contribute software to the fediverse at large.

You can read a partial summary of my work so far at my new Patreon page!

    > I am writing Rust code for about 5 years now and I _never_ needed a debugger

You've been writing #rust code since a year before 1.0.0 and didn't need a debugger, even when working with a pre-1.0 language? Wow

Huge shout out to @anna to thank her for all her help testing the Mastodon streaming server I've been working on!

Still a lot of work left but, thanks to her help, we're now much closer to having a fast, low-memory, drop in replacement for the current Node.js streaming server.

Thanks as well to all the witches.live folks who put up with some service irregularities during our testing!

Thank you to those who asked me about the issue and to those who were willing to listen to me make my case. Even if I didn't convince you, that you asked and even considered my words is a good start. Keep an open mind and always ask questions before assuming ill will.

This isn't an attack on your freedom, it's an appeal to your humanity and a plea for caring towards your fellow people. Be sensitive to the issues that affect disproportionately those less fortunate than you

I'm a die-hard fan of print debugging. Most of the time I want to see the whole control flow at once. Breakpoints show one place at a time and you have to keep the jumps in your head. It's like using a GPS to find your way out of the carpark.

I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on this. I tend to feel guilty about how much I use print debugging (especially in #rust, where I haven't found a debugger I love). But maybe I should embrace it?

Yeah, I knew that about the Balkans (or Eastern Europe, or Central Europe), but I'd thought of the contrast being with "western Europe".

Same with England and "contenental Europe". I hadn't heard it with just "Europe"

That's really interesting. This was in Europe, right? And "too European" was still used in that sense? Very interesting

    I disagree.

    > Should Botswana rename it's currency just because "Pula" is the work for "dick" in Romanian?

There's a big difference between name acedentally sharing the same spelling as a word in a different language and a name that was picked on purpose, referencing a term in the project's primary language.

Also, toots on controversial subjects like this should generally be behind a CW.

If nobody comes forward by 2020, it'll be forced to shut down. Please boost to spread the word.

There's a really good version of an intro MIT course taught through Python on EdEx (and it doesn't assume any familiarity with the language/programming)
