I think it stems from the novel indeed, but must admit that I'm not entirely certain. I've seen the quote being attributed to Carl Sagan in a bunch of places, though.

In 2018 you as the customer apparently end up working as beta tester and Q&A for new products.

Out of the last 8 devices I bought, 6 were defect on arrival 😕

I can only assume that means it's a lot cheaper for companies to deal with disgruntled customers than implementing proper quality assurance.
