At first, @matrix was "just" a modern alternative to IRC to talk on GNOME channels for me.

But the more I use it, the more I enjoy it. Having your own instance is really pleasant.

Of course not everyone is a systems administrator, let alone a competent one. There is a real need for small managed instances.

Fun @matrix experiment of the day: if you wipe most of your history by setting a retention of 3 minutes instead of 3 months by mistake (which will delete every message older than 3 minutes on your instance), and grow back that limit to 1 year, your instance will self-heal by retrieving the federated events from other instances.

Of course, this only works for federated events (i.e. not rooms with only members from your instance) and if at least another instance still has the events.

I love when people get out of Libre software bigotry and push for the better, allowing their peers not to be perfect.

Projects such as @nextcloud and @wallabag or @matrix provide iOS versions of their apps, and I think it does more for freeing users than bashing them about using a non-free system

Libre software is important, but it is a mean to free people, not an end in itself

For the record, E2EE is not enough itself. Implementing a backdoor at the client app level allows to decrypt the whole conversation and send it to the mothership.

This is a nice reminder that non-free software can easily be abused to deny people's basic human rights

The last funding goal of @Framasoft 's project for an ActivityPub-enabled event coordination software is nearly reached!

It needs less than 200€ a day in the 16 days to go until the end of the campaign to be fully funded.

Worried about the sustainability of the solution? Framasoft already funded (and developed) #PeerTube, which was released in v1.0 in October 2018. The last release was one week ago, and they're still working on it.

I'm still amazed by the state of that industry. Why paying for an eBook for nearly the same price as a printed book gives you a file you don't own and you can't use, while piracy gives you a file you can use like an actual book?

When buying a book, I can read it where I want, in as many places I want, on as many couches I want, and I can even lend it to a friend. And that's legal.

Wasn't technology supposed to make the future better?

Hey @Liberapay, do you plan to support bounties? It would be nice if several of us could pay for a feature we'd like to see implemented in Libre software 🙂

As an example, I'd like to see WebExtensions support in @gnome Web, and I bet a paid bounty would help finding people to implement it

The Librem 5 should support @matrix IM at launch. @Purism works with the @gnome community to split Fractal into two apps:
- GNOME Messages (for individual or small groups conversations, either through Matrix or SMS)
- GNOME Conversations (for larger channels)

There also is a PoC application being worked on in case E2EE is not supported in GNOME Messages/Conversations by the phone launch.

Other protocols (e.g. Signal) likely won't make it to GNOME Messages, at least initially.
