I had a feeling that if it was basic and sensible, you had probably already proposed it -- I just hadn't realized how long ago ;-)

Even Google+, which got a lot of things right, inexplicably doesn't quite get this right. :scowl:

The best design seems kind of obvious to me. Leaving out privacy scope for the moment:

* users can create a thing -- let's call it a "channel"
* owner can choose which of their channel(s) to post to.
* Any user can subscribe to any other users' public channels
* a channel owner can delegate channel control and write-access to other users

There's room for lots of refinement... but why isn't this basic concept just always a thing?

The problem, as I see it, is one of resources. Even instance owners who are programmers (<raises hand>) can't afford to take the time necessary to get enough into Mastodon's code to understand how it works -- and that's just the first step in rewriting or modifying it -- no matter how much we'd like to.

So, somehow we have to secure sufficient funding for at least one of us to be able to focus on this while also paying the bills.

(I could elaborate further.)

@polymerwitch Transparency *should* be applied wherever there is a concentration of power.

Applied in the other direction (i.e. used by the powerful to demand information from the less-powerful), it's a form of oppression.

@maloki Oops, by "writing" I meant "coding" -- but now you've got me thinking about other kinds of writing and how that could dovetail with other projects I've got going, like Issuepedia. ...because it does seem like there's also a good deal of non-coding writing to be done as well.

On a related tack: do you know anything about shopping writing to potential publishers?

@maloki ...paying part-time distance-work that I only _partly_ qualify for -- but if I know someone else whose skills matches the _rest_ of the requirements, it might be possible to do the work as a team of some sort.

(That's pretty much how @LottieVixen and I landed some regular coding work together just this past week.)

@maloki Chronic pain is awful; I have friends who deal with it, and... yeah. :-( The closest I've come is incapacitating headaches at random intervals, and that was plenty bad enough.

I'm still catching up with your other messages, but over the longer term I'd like to find some way to fund a small team for "stuff that really should get written" -- so that's my primary reason for asking.

A secondary reason is that I occasionally come across... (cont.)
