exactly. i don't care if somebody has a PhD or not, i care if they actually know the shit they claim to know.

@Troim honestly the idea of AI running on the blockchain is terrifying stuff

there's a couple of angles you could play.
- anti-mining groups warning the end is near, shut it all down now
- they thought they shut down the anomaly but in reality there was a mutation in the current version of the smart contract so the anomaly just went dark until it was ready to take everything over
- ethereum-powered attack drones for military conquest but only if you can pay gas fees

@Troim it's yours, let me know how it turns out.
seems like a more viable back story to the Terminator series anyway.

@Troim I think something more along the lines of the DAO would be a good storyline. except maybe instead of investments, it just pulls a skynet.
I can see it now...
"we couldn't stop it, it was software. in the blockchain. the only solution? get to manchuria as soon as possible before the nuclear holocaust starts..."
(this is why people pay me not to write literature)

@Laurelai well there's some oil peeps here who seem ok, but their park renovation has created a huge traffic nightmare for past 3 years

@Laurelai it depends on the billionaire but in general I agree, most are asshats.
if they take their startup lottery winnings and do good things with it, then maybe they are ok. elin is definitely an asshat

observation: somebody who has to constantly remind others of their credentials likely has no useful skills or recent knowledge related to said credentials.
downplay the credentials, it's not the important part of higher education. learning new things and building a social network are the important parts.

@weirdoslam @a_breakin_glass @plsburydoughboy oh his plan is just to have the car park itself. which means it will drive around indefinitely looking for a spot that isn't there

therefore the correct solution is mass transit (light rail) to the general vicinity and then paratransit (shuttles, maybe something like uber/lyft/cabs for those willing to pay a premium) rest of the way.

beyond that, all of these car people always seem to forget that the real problem is finding a place to park the car after you arrive at your destination. -

definitely not. in another thread, i mentioned that building a 3D substrate of tunnels is never going to scale because it takes way too long to make a tunnel, as well as costing way too much money.
or to put it more plainly -- elon's new venture is, quite literally, the worst mass transit value proposition for a city's budget.

yes, the car manufacturers are to blame for the elimination of streetcar infrastructure, but that doesn't change the fact that the so-called "expert" (in my opinion transit "experts" would be people who use mass transit every day) keeps pushing for bus-based transit options instead of proper light rail.
light rail is more efficient because in most cases it doesn't have to compete against the road traffic.

did you miss this entire part:
> elon's plan is of course fantasy land, it's not going to scale because building a 3D substrate of tunnels is going to literally cost trillions of dollars.

i mean, it's a libertarian against a neoliberal. i don't really have a dog in that fight, so to speak.elon's plan is of course fantasy land, it's not going to scale because building a 3D substrate of tunnels is going to literally cost trillions of dollars.
but quite literally, jarret walker is the architect of great ideas like "who needs mass rail, lets just deploy BRT everywhere" and "cities less than 1 million people will get better ROI on their transit programs if they stick with buses." the guy sure does love buses.
his plans don't ever have much to do with trains, even though europe has proven again and again that heavy light rail deployment is the true mass transit hero.
a pox on both their houses, and most importantly, light rail for all cities that can make use of it.

he didn't say to abandon that, he called the person who is responsible for the disaster that is US public transport an idiot.
while that's not so great, it doesn't detract from the fact that his advice to urban planners has been largely defective.
