If you're in the US and thrilled about the FCC's proposal to repeal #NetNeutrality regulations, here's what you can do next:
* Buy Netflix stock and tell them to behave reponsibly as a company.
* Tell the pro-neutrality crowd that they are being used as tools to enable Netflix to be subsidized by your ISP bill.

pondering how to *responsibly* bring FTS to mastodon.
key points:
- FTS would be opt-in on a per-post basis
- Accounts would have a setting for the default opt-in/opt-out
- The opt-in/opt-out would be added as an ActivityPub message attribute
- A visual warning would be displayed for opt-out posts advising that the opt-in/opt-out only works for servers you trust, similar to the other warnings of that nature.

mastodon a long time ago had FTS patches.
they were abandoned largely because postgres FTS doesn't provide the capabilities a typical user expects out of FTS.

fundamentally, social software which claims to also be "free software" shouldn't do two things:
- lie to users
- obstruct access to functionality that is trivially accessed outside the software
AGPL is very clear: software is meant to work for the *user*, not the *admin* and not other third parties.

to be clear: the only way to be absolutely sure that your statuses are not exposed to full-text search are to (1) never ever federate with anyone and (2) use only an instance with an admin you trust (because they can go into postgres and search that way).

it really depends on what side of the authoritarian vs libertarian side of the neo-con spectrum you land on.
libertarians are neo-cons that wish to smash the state and replace it with corporate rule. snowden and assange are people who would be this type of neo-con.

seriously that is up there amongst other bullshit like:
- IRCv3.3 hasn't shipped in 3 years because it's now a "living standard"
- InspIRCd is memory efficient because it's written in C++ and leverages RAII heavily
- grsecurity and PaX are critical for linux security

mastodon doesn't implement full-text search to "protect" you!
HahAHAHaAHAAhAAAHHAAAHHAAAHAHAAAAH
THAT IS THE MOST HILARIOUS BULLSHIT I HAVE HEARD SO FAR THIS WEEK
gargamel doesn't want to implement full-text search for your safety! HA.
more like he doesn't want to add another 2GB RAM requirement on for a lucene implementation such as elasticsearch.
this is seriously the most ridiculous theory i've ever heard this week, and i find it funny that gargamel jumped on that explanation.

did you know that it is possible to be a neo-con without being transphobic, homophobic or racist ?

lordie you people are *way* off base for why mastodon doesn't have full-text search by default.
the real answer is because full-text search in postgresql is ridiculously expensive and doing it for real would require storing the toots *twice*: one copy in postgres for forward lookups, and one copy in lucene for reverse lookup (searching).
basically the cost of the feature outweighs it's usefulness in most cases.

i wonder how many people remember that SNOWDEN is a neo-conservative and only whistle-blew on the NSA because he disliked the surveillance apparatus.

"common sense" is not the same thing as "instabanned."
"instabanned" is reimagined traditional IRCop thuggery.
