Latest installment in the free 3D-printed ork army: a goblin tank. This is a great little model, and I magnetized the turret gun so it can be swapped out for a different weapon if desired.

MOAR PRINTZ
I'm trying to get a friend (and his son who is of a similar age to mine) into Warhammer 40K (and/or Grimdark Future). He loves the idea, but the cost of the Games Workshop models is somewhat prohibitive for him, so I've started 3D printing him an army (Orks). These free models I found online aren't fantastic sculpts, but they're great for the price, and they'll make fine proxies for Ork Boyz. The one really annoying thing is, they're on 25mm bases, which is a size too small for proper Boyz. It's not a HUGE deal, but in Warhammer the base is really the main part of the model that interacts with the game mechanics, so it's somewhat important. I could probably dick around in Blender for a while and put these guys on 32mm bases and re-print them. Instead I've chosen to print a bunch of 32mm blanks and he can just glue their tiny bases on top of appropriate ones.

I'm pretty excited to have printed this free 3rd party "Hellbrute" model for Warhammer 40K / Grimdark Future. I glued on some small bits from other Death Guard model kits and filled in seams with epoxy putty. I think this is going to turn out great, and be a perfect addition to my Death Guard army, which is currently a little light on firepower.

First attempt at this either had supports that were too weak, too much surface area on the FEP, or both. The supports printed, but the model ended up as an overexposed pancake stuck to the bottom. I added beefier supports and hollowed the skull, and it worked like a charm.

Initial test print on my Anycubic Photon Mono 4K. Rather that use the test file that came with the printer, I downloaded this generic one and sliced it myself to test my actual slicer settings (vs. however the test file is optimized) and it looks really nice. I can't really say I see any flaws in it, and even the teensy raised lettering on the top looks super sharp. Now on to something a bit more complicated.
I bit the bullet earlier this week and ordered an MSLA printer. While I'm waiting for it to arrive I've been searching for 3D models and educating myself on the process. I've found a lot of cool free models, but most of them are "unsupported", so I've been practicing that skill and also dipping my toe into blender.
I think I'm pretty close to buying a 3D resin printer, but I am a little overwhelmed by the choices. My main use case will be printing wargaming miniatures and other small models. I don't want to spend a ton of money, but I also don't want crap that I'll quickly want to upgrade from. 4K is preferred, and any software it needs will have to run on linux. Any suggestions?
This is a great perspective from inside the industry. There are also some gems of historical trivia.
Example: Did you know that throwing rotten vegetables at performers started as a form of civic protest against anti-Irish stereotyping?

My first attempt at making a bochet (caramelized honey mead). So far so good. I cooked the honey in a crock pot for 4 hours until it turned a dark coffee color. Should be good to go in about a year :D
One unintended side-effect of routing all my phone's traffic through Amsterdam is that I now get #GDPR pop ups on most commercial sites. Oh well.
I just set up a tiny "stardust" VM on Scaleway, so now I have a privately controlled VPN server located in Amsterdam that only costs me ~ $1.50 USD per month.

I just finished watching the final episode of The Expanse. I wasn't super happy with this season in general, because 6 reduced length episodes was just too constraining to tell the story properly, but damn that last episode was good. A lot of shows go out with a whimper (or even a WTF?) so I'm thankful they at least wrapped it up with class.
Given how rushed the season was, though, I'm still left a little confused why they devoted so much time to the "Strange Dogs" mini-storyline (Cara and Xan on Laconia). As a book reader I know where it's going, but from the show's perspective it's just kind of a weird non-sequitur. Maybe they have secret plans to adapt the last three books on another platform, but that's my fanboy optimism talking. My inner cynic wonders if it was to leave people frustrated so they'll go buy the books 😃
Can anyone recommend a good VPS host? My mail server hosted at vpscheap.net just went tits up and I can't access to console. Looking for a reliable alternative to move to that's not prohibitive. Preferably one that lets you use Debian.
I was listening to a radio interview regarding mafia involvement in the Christmas tree business. At first I was kind of surprised, but after thinking about it, it makes sense. They're cash businesses that pop up suddenly in parking lots and then evaporate a few weeks later. Great for laundering money (and apparently also selling drugs).
