Because I have a bunch of okho stone left over, I decided to re-do my 5.5 gallon kitchen tank. I've never been totally happy with it. I decided to try to 'dry start' method here as well, so the fish have been relocated to another tank for the time being.

With this tank, I'm trying out all new techniques (Mattenfilter, "aqua soil" substrate, "dry start" plant growth). I just received my order of okho/dragon stone, so I decided to try another thing and set up an "iwagumi" aquascape. I'm pretty happy with it as ot is now, but since I cant start planting until I get a light for the tank I'll have a few days to stare at it and make any adjustments.

Since the Mattenfiler occupies an entire corner of the tank, I like how this layout draws the eye to the other side to minimize the intrusion.

I blacked out the back panel with acrylic paint and cut a piece of filter foam. I've also purchased 8kg of Fluval Stratum and 20 pounds of okho stone. This weekend I plan to build the stand, and then I can start messing around with the hardscape.

I got some pieces of 1/4" plate cut at a local glass shop. Added a center brace to prevent bowing and vertical braces for the mattenfilter.

I've decided to try my hand at the "dry start" method of growing plants in the new shrimp tank. Essentially, you grow the plants in place for 1-2 months without water in the tank. Since many "aquatic" plants also grow fully or semi-emerged, you can speed up the time it takes for the tank to fill out, while also not having to compete with algae. With much more available CO2 from the air, the plants grow much faster. Once they've grown sufficiently, you fill the tank with water and they'll (hopefully) stay alive but grow more slowly.

I want to stick with plants I already have instead of buying new ones, and I don't want anything too tall, so I've decided on H. pinnatifida, S. repens, and M tweediei (Monte Carlo), as well as V. montagnei (Christmas moss).
