I've decided to try my hand at the "dry start" method of growing plants in the new shrimp tank. Essentially, you grow the plants in place for 1-2 months without water in the tank. Since many "aquatic" plants also grow fully or semi-emerged, you can speed up the time it takes for the tank to fill out, while also not having to compete with algae. With much more available CO2 from the air, the plants grow much faster. Once they've grown sufficiently, you fill the tank with water and they'll (hopefully) stay alive but grow more slowly.

I want to stick with plants I already have instead of buying new ones, and I don't want anything too tall, so I've decided on H. pinnatifida, S. repens, and M tweediei (Monte Carlo), as well as V. montagnei (Christmas moss).

I had a whole weekend of nothing to do and no child to parent lined up, so I waffled on my previous decision and started reading past the events of The Expanse. Cibola Burn was a fun read (I blew through 500+ pages in 2 days), but I found the motivation and persistence of the villain(s) a bit preposterous. I'll be interested to see how it gets adapted for the screen. Based on how the previous books were adapted, I expect to see significant deviations from the source material in season 4. Too many major characters are sidelined in this story for it to make it to television intact; they're going to have to invent some new plot-lines to keep them busy for 3 episodes.

The platy fry are doing really well. I lost one about a week in, but that leaves 18(?) alive at my last count. I'm hatching brine shrimp in a room that's warmer than the rest of the house, so I can produce a new batch every 24 hours for them.

I also picked up a 20L at a Petco $1/gallon sale that I'm going to make into a planted, rimless shrimp tank with a custom stand. Since it's for shrimp, I'm going to try a "Matten" filter in one of the back corners.

I got the rest of my backordered fish yesterday. 33 harlequin rasboras (T. heteromorpha). They all arrived alive, but unfortunately I lost one and one... isn't a harlequin rasbora. I need to try to identify it.

Hey @[rbfarmer](/people/fa88b4b0a5dc0134e3250cc47a07853c) I just started my first shiitake block fruiting, and I looked back and saw I innoculated my jars on 9/4. That's over 3 months of waiting. Is that typical?

I smacked this beauty around and then refrigerated it for 2 days. Here's hoping it fruits.

Now that I have a new light on the accursed tank where no plants will grow, I decided to try again to grow plants. Instead of getting fancy, I bought some java fern, which is essentially bulletproof. It looks better already.

The whole "preferred pronoun" thing is a nice idea, but I don't think it's practical to keep a mental inventory of the preferences of every single person I find myself needing to refer to. I would much rather get rid of gendered pronouns. Not all languages use them, yet they seem to communicate without difficulty.
