Many leftists have an intense identification with the problems of groups that have an image of being weak (women), defeated (American Indians), repellent (homosexuals) or otherwise inferior. The leftists themselves feel that these groups are inferior. They would never admit to themselves that they have such feelings, but it is precisely because they do see these groups as inferior that they identify with their problems.

My point here is that what is "true" on reddit is being decided by popular opinion - upvotes and downvotes - and the silencing of data that doesn't have popular support. This is not how science should be determined.

People who once read a middle-school physics text get highly upvoted by claiming that because of "conservation of energy", putting a turbine on a river slows down the whole river downstream.

Corrections pointing out that that's not how rivers work are being silenced with downvotes. This is how science by consensus works.
