You programmed it by wiring the switches together so that certain inputs (switch positions) yielded outputs (lights on or off). So not a Turing machine. Not even a stored-program computer. It did however somewhat demystify how computers worked to child-me.

I had one of those. Kind of disappointing for ten-year-old me but ended up teaching me a bunch of stuff.
Consisted of rows of clusters of springs which you connected with wires (just like all of the RS electronics kits). Each row had a switch which joined all of the bottom rows or top rows depending on position. Top panel had light bulbs and a place for translucent labels. Power came from batteries.

To be fair, I saw it on fansubbed VHS copies that Iโd traded an original cel for.

The Better options all require advanced skills to use. Non-technical users deserve privacy too.
* Non-federation means users not giving up at server selector dialog and no one-off hostile servers.
* Phone numbers are mediocre IDs but hard for users to screw up.
* Google prevents third parties (e.g. abusive ex, corrupt local sherrif) from tampering with the apk.
* Funding is funding; the USG funds lots of stuff, some of it good.
Signal is imperfect but the perfect is the enemy of the good.
