Thought for today: Since marijuana is legal in Canada, and since the government want to protect young people from its advertising, I wonder if hash tags will become illegal.

So I realize I've been thinking of social networks as graph-based and set-based.
Graph-based means you follow other users and get a feed of their posts. (E.g. Facebook, Goople, birdsite, here).
Set-based means you are either in or out and if you're in, your feed is the same as everyone else who's in. (E.g. subreddits, mailing lists, USENET groups, web fora.)
I'm finding this to be a useful distinction.

Maybe?
The problem with Facebook is that network effects make it a necessity for most people. Iโm thinking that the best strategy for replacing it with something humane may be to attack different use cases separately.

Hmmm. I wonder if email could be the basis for a Facebook killer. The killer app for Facebook is distributing announcements and coordinating events.
I'm envisioning a federated announcement service that sends your updates to users on your or other instances OR email addresses. Non-users would still get the announcements and could easily redirect them to an account should they decide to join via a link embedded in each message.
(Yes, abuse becomes a problem. It may be fixable via an opt-in mechanism.)

Tech tip: when installing or updating macOS, pay careful attention to the Introductory Tour. Thatโs the list of things youโll want to remove or disable afterward.

A way to think about it is that Unix can be:
1. An operating system developed at Bell Labs in the early 1970s.
2. An umbrella term for a family of operating systems derived from Unix(1) or clones of Unix(1).also:
3. A trademark and certification that nobody cares about.
Ironically, Unix(1) does not qualify for Unix(3) but some versions of Windows do.

Dear Lazyweb,
I'm thinking about updating my Macbook Air from 10.11 (El Capitan) to 10.13 (High Sierra, aka last year's release). This is mostly a precaution against needing a more recent version sometime in the future and not having time to do it then.
My question is, should I update to the intermediate version first, or is Apple good enough at this stuff that I can just switch to 10.13 and not expect anything to break?
TIA,
--Chris

You may want to look into Julia. Itโs a language for scientific computing thatโs trying to be both easily interactive like Python while also being really fast.
