@sophia wait... you’re saying you don’t like the bit where Eowyn screams “I AM NO MAN!” and shoves a sword through the Witch King of Angmar’s face?!

Or the bit where Sean Bean is a human pin cushion?

Or that ridiculous scene where the giant trees smash up Isengard?

    Well, here’s a consolation...

Apparently some Elite: Dangerous players successfully executed a daring rescue mission to save one of their comrades from the galactic void. (They’d been there for 3 months with no fuel)

@sikkdays @zatnosk tbh Thinkpads get a bad rap because companies often provision really old models at their most basic spec, then pre-load a restricted build of Windows on top of it.

However if you buy one second hand and upgrade it you get a dirt cheap computer that’s built like a tank. 😂

@zatnosk if you have work colleagues, you could ask what they use.

I think corporations make a lot of money & dodge their tax obligations, so have no qualms about asking for what I need. Whether the answer is “yes” is another matter 😂

For my last job writing Java middleware I was given a MacBook Pro to do dev work. For the job I have now I use a Thinkpad because I write docs for Oracle Linux and want to “dog food” that system like the rest of the team.

@zatnosk If work’s buying, get a Mac. You can install most tools through homebrew, and if you miss Linux there’s always Virtualbox.

If this hurts your very soul, a Thinkpad or Dell XPS 13 are solid laptops that should run Linux without any issues.

If you see your patreon heroes yelling “I HAVE NO MONEY PLEASE HELP”, you should probably PayPal them some money.

Yet again, Patreon is paying creators late. They had one job and... they seem to be struggling with it.

You're taking in HOW MUCH money and you can't even get payments to the creators your whole business is built on in a reasonable fashion months after you know there's a problem? Really?

I saw someone on here say “27 is like turning 30 in advance”, and it *may* have broken me 😭

(I turn 28 in April, and am decidedly not old! *shakes fist at pesky teenagers*)

@js true, if it ever got Matrix support it’d be via plug-in.

I think the closest alternative is XMPP, but of course that doesn’t use ActivityPub. Also Google & Facebook seem to have killed adoption of it stone dead.

@js I’m also in agreement that implementing this in a single Python process also seems unwise.

When they finally establish what the APIs will look like and how a server should behave it seems a prime candidate for being written in a machine-compiled language. (Or one that compiles to bytecode and makes good use of JVM optimisations)

@js in fairness, it’s still quite early-stage technology. The API isn’t even frozen yet!

Hey, y'all-- Facebook recently announced they're launching a "Patreon killer" service.

Regardless of your thoughts on Patreon, FB's alternative is TERRIBLE!

    ⚠️ 30% gross revenue fee
⚠️ Automatic LIFETIME IP rights to ANYTHING you put on the service
    even if you quit!
⚠️ FB wants to give discounts and freebies whenever they like, w/o creator approval, and then deduct it from creator revenue
⚠️ FB will also control WHO sees your content and how many views you have

Idea: a small program that runs on your work computer. You put in your hourly wage, and at random intervals throughout your shift, it pops up a little notification that you just made X amount of money in Y length of time, with a nice coin-jingling sound effect. You click a button to collect your loot, and it adds to the running total for what you've made that day and overall.

This retro tech YouTuber is one of the best! Nice to see something that isn't yet another retrograde & restoration!

My sister got a C128 for her kids' first computer and I remember playing with the built in sprite editor and enhanced graphics capabilities in its BASIC but this is an excellent 6502 assembly tutorial using the built in monitor.

And rounding up those miscreant little sprites is so cute! :blobaww:

@trevdev Thank you for that suggestion! Doing a bit of reading up on the area, I definitely want to book a trip there to take a look 🙂

I'd previously assumed the Ottawa area was probably going to be where I ended up, but Victoria, BC looks like it's in that nice butter zone of not being horrifically expensive while having a good tech scene, weather that won't break me & not being too far out in the sticks. 👍
