@maloki @alxd just had a similar issue trying to contribute to the docs as a first time contributor.

Did a merge request that would’ve added a guide to adding your own icons & custom CSS using the admin UI. A week later there was no response & no feedback, so closed it.

I do technical writing as my day job, so was hoping to use those skills to contribute. πŸ€·β™‚οΈ

In case anyone else finds the work I did helpful:

If you're a computer programmer and you've heard of the Dat protocol but looked at the docs and still scratched your head (I was there myself a few months back), there's a new guide that explains in very clear, very detailed language what Dat is and how it works.

Just to be clear, I do not recommend it for non-programmers as that is not the intended audience but I *highly* recommend it for programmers:

Fortunately I don't have a daily commute to deal with anymore, but this *may* impact my intention to travel to Belgium on Friday.

(In theory I'm going to FOSDEM, but it's also possible my anxiety will get the better of me and I just do tourist stuff in Brussels and have a nostalgia trip to Leuven)

when you can control it, esp on youtube, try to avoid putting important visual information along the bottom bit of the screen. youtube's subtitles on mobile devices aren't able to be moved, and you often can't move them around on other platforms, so sometimes we have to turn subtitles off just to see the thing you're showing.

Also, I should probably note that I suspended my donations to the FSF last month.

That was mostly down the FSF board's refusal to confirm that Stallman is subject to the same rules & policies as everyone else at their events.

The donations will resume if & when they clarify this.

@matt @starbreaker this is kind of why I'm fascinated by systems like the Apple Macintosh LC II.

These were usually bought for specialist computer labs in British schools, but they were normally serviced by Acorn (which provided the BBC Micro and subsequently several models of the Acorn Archimedes)

What ultimately sank Acorn was the UK government switching to RM because they could see the writing was on the wall for computers that couldn't run Windows. But its legacy lives on thanks to ARM πŸ™‚

@matt @starbreaker I suspect it's because big beige American boxes were expensive for us to import!

My anecdotal experience was that British people didn't fully switch to proper beige desktop PCs until the late '90s and early '00s. That roughly coincided with Microsoft Office becoming ubiquitous and the Internet getting cheap enough to use.

I remember electric typewriters and 16-bit machines made by Acorn, Amstrad & Commodore still being used for serious work when I was in primary school.

@matt I don't understand why micros are excludes from the third generation tbh. They're all video games platforms you can hook up to the living room TV with gamepads or joysticks, no? πŸ€·β™‚οΈ

If NES hadn't filled the void in 1985, arguably Sega or Commodore could have with their systems. I guess the other thing I'm mocking is Nintendo's "back room deals" which arguably made the situation worse.

I *may* invest in a HD upscaler at some point for my Sega Mega Drive. Currently I'm using SCART, and you can see on my living room plasma screen that downscaling PAL and graphics artifacting/corruption are issues πŸ˜…

(I previously had this hooked up to an old freecycled CRT in my front office with my Dreamcast, but have since moved it downstairs so I use it more)

Also, sidenote: FIFA 97 supports indoor six-a-side matches. It makes me sad that this disappeared in later versions!

That being said, I'm decidedly less proud of my battery replacement.

The original was kept in place by four blobs of solder. I don't have a soldering iron, so I've "elegantly" used cello tape.

It doesn't cover the screw holes and this'll all be hidden when it's back in the case, so I'm fine with this bodge πŸ˜…

Today's awesome #retrocomputing discovery: the chip inside the Sega Mega Drive cartridge for FIFA 97 actually has the name of the game stamped on the chip!

The plan here is to replace the battery and clean the pins at the bottom so it'll work again.
