Credit where it's due, the library of games for the NES isn't bad and I'm enjoying playing them on an emulator for the Nintendo Switch.

Its successor, the SNES, also outsold the much more powerful Sega Megadrive despite the North American version looking like an ugly grey block.

(Seriously, compare the North American SNES to the Super Famicom the rest of the world got! πŸ˜‚)

It looks like there's some more scary news about Facebook.

Apparently companies like Netflix, Spotify & various banks had read, write and delete access to people's private messages. Facebook claimed the oversight was because they didn't consider them "service providers" πŸ€¦β™‚οΈ

Worse still, Yandex (a search engine with links to the Kremlin) had the same access, although they deny being aware of or ever using that access.

Here's the direct link to the findings from those documents:

    https://www.parliament.uk/documents/commons-committees/culture-media-and-sport/Note-by-Chair-and-selected-documents-ordered-from-Six4Three.pdf

    It is really quite damning.

    * Facebook deliberately obscured from users what information they were collecting about them & how to opt out

    * Facebook used its monopoly to cripple competing applications and services

    * Facebook signed agreements to acquire data other app developers collected in exchange for some of its own

    * Companies could circumvent user permissions by signing an agreement with Facebook

Other alternatives to Signal in the single server (unfederated) category are RocketChat and NextCloud Talk. The latter might federate in future versions.

Add option to auto-delete old statuses
    https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/pull/9384

This is an upcoming feature! It will let a user set all their own posts to automatically delete themselves after a certain amount of time. If you've ever tried https://ephemeral.glitch.social you'll be familiar with the general idea! It's also reminiscent of Snapchat.

You can click the πŸ‘ if you're into it, and if you want to know if/when it gets approved or stay up-to-date with discussion you can click "subscribe" on the right. ✨

toots on this instance are ephemeral; they disappear after a while (between 20 minutes and 4 hours) depending on the current phase of the moon. also a disclaimer: your toots will be deleted from this instance. other instances that federate with this one SHOULD delete your toots but unfortunately that's not something that can be guaranteed. UNSTABLE BUT FRIENDLY followbots from other instances will be blocked. please report them Some rules Do not engage in harassment of any kind. Racist, sexist and other oppressive slurs will get you suspended, even in non-public conversations. You can post porn and nudity, but you must use the nsfw flag and do not post on the public timeline or you will be silenced (ask around how to make unlisted posts) try to be kind no non-sentient bots until further notice no shit that's illegal in Canada animated gifs should always be marked sensitive/NSFW and identified as animated gifs (for now let's say just putting 'gif' in the text of the toot is sufficient), because they can cause serious problems for people oh yeah, NO SCREENSHOTS or copying text of toots not belonging to you. it defeats the purpose some guidelines stuff here is impermanent but i still want this to be as safe a space as we can reasonably make it. let's keep common triggers and angry/ranty/grumpy toots behind CWs free speech maximalists can kindly fuck off. there are instances where that is a priority. this is not one of them. all languages are welcome! the privacy stuff in the 'terms' isn't what it should be, but no time to change it yet. this instance's data will not be sold or traded or whatever. BE WARNED this instance may actually be unstable at times. It will likely be used for experimenting with settings and tweaks to Mastodon. So the place may experience outages, not federate reliably with the rest of the world, have posts go missing, or other technical faults. As such it's meant to be a chill, maybe kinda playful place. Time to see what we can do with this thing! Time to Λ₯βˆ€IΖ†OS HΖ†βŠ₯IΛ₯⅁

"the thing is, a lot of those people [kids on Arpanet in the 1970s] felt outcast by societyβ€”they were geeks; their families and their fellow students didn’t understand them; they had nobody. And we welcomed them into the community [at MIT AI lab] and invited them to learn and start to do some useful work. It was amazing for them not to be treated as trash."

Today's discovery: DoubleTwist functions more pleasantly as an audio player than VLC does on my Android phone, mostly because it knows what an album actually is

@emsenn @slightlyflightyone indeed, according to what I heard as a youngster it was meant to be a penance thing that stops people going to hell.

Now if you suck you go to purgatory/hades (depending on your Christian denomination) instead until you're deemed "pure" enough to go to heaven.

It's an afterlife myth as good as any I suppose.

Looks like someone created a program launcher for the Amstrad PCW called DeskJoy. It uses the Samaruc GIU with icons, windows, buttons, etc.

I can't explain in words how much I love its interface.

Before getting the Windows 3.1 laptop for writing I used an Amstrad PCW 8256. It had a beautiful green phosphor screen and came with a basic office suite embedded on ROM of which I only ever used the WordProcessor.

The printer was so noisy that I couldn't use it at night, that thing was like a machine gun going off!
