From the same podcast team, an interview with Alex Vitale on his book #EndOfPolicing which I just finished reading. A near perfect 1hr summary - topical structure of the book is tossed to emphasize the historical context and structural themes of the problems of increasing police involvement in responding to all societal problems with force and coercion. Criminalization of poverty, sex, and mental health, and the colonial/anti-labor/slave-patrol roots of policing.
@newsstream So, it's good that the poor only get the cast-offs of the rich? They deserve the first of the world's fruits, not as charity but as justice.
@grok @openculture Yeah. Why folks with kids my age aren't advocating for free post-secondary tuition continues to blow my mind. It's not like we won't know what the costs will be. Even the change in cost of tuition and quality of education from my university is astounding to teens' ears.
@shoutcacophony It's always about urgency, about needing to do things right away, these campaigns. Saw the same here on Anishinaabeg land as gun-shot cameras and acoustic microphones installed at last minute to keep community safe.

Saltiest Cloisterhttp://qttr.at/23so : Mali (+$308 million): B2Gold has a majority interest in the Fekola Gold project, which was under construction in 2016 and is slated to start production at the end of 2017. 75% of the world's mining companies are based in Canada, according to vice.com. Mining.com/tag/mali is a good site, too, for more on Canadian interests in Mali. 2 Randgold mines in Mali are on strike and B2Gold said that Mali's new mining code won't affect its new Fekola mine, which is probably not a good thing, but it's probably like Seattle trying to negotiate with WalMart about the living-wage by-law. Really, the solution is simple: Malians should nationalize the Fekola gold mine and use the profits for their own betterment, not Canada's.
@samuelnordstrum It doesn't sound like the product of any Christian or, failing that, humane impulse, especially with its claims of arrogance and exclusivity.
@rt @grok Friend of mine has a good story of teaching Chinese students English and blowing their minds when he told them that in Taiwan people do not have to serve in the military -- unlike in mainland China.
