@Laurelai @emacsen We should absolutely kick nazis out, and advocate for kicking nazis out. Can we do it in a "robust" way?

It's definitely easy to think of how much better it can be if we could centralize the power "on our side". The best game design is one where you can be satisfied with the game rules when it's your opponent's turn.

We need a robust solution. Centralization ain't it. Blocklists, in the long run, ain't it either, but they're doing a better job than nothing for now.

Maybe the best "pitch" is just running, end-user-facing code.

I kinda worry that while Spritely Magenc/Crystal are a bit more obvious as to why they're necessary (secure/private content distribution that can survive nodes going down), it's not as obvious why I'm building Goblins/Goblinoid. I need to work on my "pitch" (yuck, can't think of a better word though) for why it's necessary for the more advanced secure interactions stuff.

Need to add some tests, then it's on to vats, then it's on to games.

... I probably should spend some time in the middle there actually making the announcement about Spritely Crystal since that one's already basically done :P

    I'm bad at PR

@liw @emacsen Yup! The problems are similar: the propagation of unwanted content.

@Laurelai @emacsen That's one path, though if implemented in a way that's *merely* the inverse of blocklists right now, it will result in centralization because eventually everyone will just trust about 3 nodes. Now you're back to centralization again.

There are some alternatives, "web of trust", "petnames", "ocaps" are (unsurprisingly) some relevant words towards the solutions.

This isn't a "freeze peach" argument; I think it's *perfectly acceptable* to block other instances for having hate speech etc. What I'm saying is: it won't scale. We need another design for the long term.

Such designs exist; @emacsen and I are writing up some text, and I plan to write up some code. I realize in the meanwhile, blocklists are doing a better job than nothing. I just would like to do better.

We need anti-abuse systems, but it's impossible for instance blocklists to scale to the size the fediverse needs to grow. It's mostly working for now but won't long term.

Easy demonstration: imagine everyone self hosts, and that self hosting becomes trivial. Everyone agrees that's a good goal, right? (If you don't, maybe you don't really want the fediverse?)

In that case, it's trivial to make new instances, meaning already-overloaded administrators will be overwhelmed with "swatting flies".
