Tech-centric approaches without planning for its impact on people will fail to deliver a project that serves people.

People-centric design without good tech foundations will fail to be able to build something that meets its own goals.

There's no succeeding while prioritizing one over the other. To build the right systems we need to intertwine the work of both.

Official Post from Christopher Lemmer Webber: Hello everyone,Sorry for the lack of updates here over the last month or so.  We "unexpectedly" bought a house, and by that I mean that after many many years of way too many distracting moves, we were interested in settling down once and for all (but didn't figure it would be soon), and a house that

Here's my rough expected schedule for Crystal:
    - Code dump: this week
    - Docs: next week
    - Crystal Golem (a version of Golem that supports update'able content in a p2p system): week after next

Okay, I can finally write "new" versions of files in #Spritely Crystal (tahoe-lafs / freenet like mutable p2p distributable files that *don't* have consistency guarantees) and then retrieve them again.

I think this will be a useful demonstration of both some cool things we can do in p2p systems and the ways CAP tradeoffs get in the way... and how those tradeoffs reappear everywhere throughout our systems.

Nice writeup by @darius about Dat, SSB, and ActivityPub and how they can learn from each other: https://blog.datproject.org/2019/03/22/three-protocols-and-a-future-of-the-decentralized-internet/

Indeed, my post-standardization of ActivityPub work (on Spritely) has largely been about exploring similar thoughts! See also the @librelounge episode with @joeyh where we talk about Secure Scuttlebutt (esp in relation to ActivityPub) https://librelounge.org/episodes/episode-14-secure-scuttlebutt-with-joey-hess.html

@mala basically, we *NEED* ocap security in our operating systems, and it's the only viable future. If it comes handed down from a corporate direction without community involvement it might be done in a way that results in hard-to-work-around lockdown. If, however, the hardware and entire os stack are truly libre, it'll be the best advancement in user freedom since GNU

I really feel like @librelounge is turning out to be a really solid project... way better and cooler than I expected, even. Seems lots of our listeners are liking it too. That makes me really happy.

@emacsen and I have a lot more cool episodes coming up. I'm very excited about it!

On this week's @librelounge, we are joined by Agoric's amazing Kate Sills to demystify object capabilities (ocaps)! https://librelounge.org/episodes/episode-13-object-capabilities-with-kate-skills.html

If you follow me here you probably hear object capability this and object capability that and how critical they are for building robust, secure systems... but it can be hard to explain what they are to newcomers. I've long wanted a gentle introduction, and I think this episode does a good job. Give it a listen and let us know what you think!
