I'm trying to help a Pakistani guy at work find an apartment. Something tells me he's going to face as much discrimination in the rented real estate market as he has faced in his professional life. I don't know what I can do to help him. I may be privileged, but I can't force everyone else to stop discriminating... I mean, can I? What would I even do? The guy is a programmer and is college educated. He should have the same opportunities as me.

I'm starting to think that my landlord picks tenants on his property based on nationality. Everyone who is renting rooms and apartments on the property I live on seems to be from eastern Europe if they aren't from Norway. All the craftsmen he hires are from eastern Europe too. I have a Pakistani trainee at work who needs a room and my landlord seemed very unkeen on offering this trainee a room when I asked on his behalf...

Seen this way, every moment is a balancing act between the needs of now-you and those of future-you. There's always this other person you need to keep in mind who is going to suffer if you act too selfishly, and they depend 100% on you. When you do the right thing, you become their hero.

Someone in a Hacker News thread said something that gave me a revelation:

Selfishness and shortsightedness are one and the same thing.

When you choose immediate gratification over later reward, you are being selfish; not toward another person, but toward your future self. You treat your future self as a different person, and if you don't feel compassion toward that person, you won't be inclined to help them.

It's kind of unnerving that politics is how we run countries. Bickering, accusations and lies in public, Power plays, intimidation, betrayal and secret deals in private. None of it works like the earnest and wholesome version of democracy that they teach you about in school.
