For those who already followed me at @thor: I'm trying out octodon.social as my new home for a while. There's a good chance it'll become my permanent home.

For new followers: my mysterious past can be made much less mysterious by browsing said account.

It's kind of weird that because a star puked out a few planets that started orbiting around it and one of them turns every 24 hours, the little creatures that grow on it have evolved to fall unconscious for the hours when the sun doesn't bake their part of the planet, and that's why your smartphone wakes you up every morning so you can go to work and swear at computers together.

The problem with global warming and plastic pollution is that they are huge problems you can't personally personally deal with. Thinking about problems that you can't personally deal with is a recipe for depression, and the best cure is to forget about them until you can. What sucks balls about the environmental issues is that this is exactly the reason we have them in the first place. What's good for the individual is bad for the earth. We basically evolved to destroy it.

@shorshe As far as I can tell, Pandora had people put metadata on their song library, according to what they thought were important properties of a song.

There are sweet spots for all of those parameters that I think describe a person's music tastes pretty well. The only thing it couldn't really help you with is good lyrics, for those that care about lyrics. I suppose you *could* use metadata for that and use a Bayesian classifier to give every lyric one or more personalised probabilities that you include in the multidimensional vector.

I'm pretty sure I could code a music recommendation algorithm that actually works. It would pretty much ignore all the metadata and analyse the audio waveforms instead, and pick up on things like timbre, energy, noise/sizzle, tempo, rhythm, instruments and vocals, and create a multidimensional vector for every song in the library, and then I'd match that against one or more equivalent vectors belonging to the current user in order to make recommendations.

Hmm, on older Mastodon, I could click on the notifications for my own picture posts in order to view them. On this new version, the link to the picture itself gets in the way.

@natecull This is probably the most complex analog circuit I've designed, a preamplifier for lapel microphones: http://thj.no/personal/preamp2.png

@natecull I also get confused if it's a PNP instead of an NPN.

Oscillators I can sort of grok, because they're typically just feeding back into themselves through a component that delays the signal a little.

@natecull My saving grace when it comes to analog circuitry is operational amplifiers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operational_amplifier_applications

As for transistors, I can follow if it's just a BJT with a current limiting resistor on the base and a pulldown resistor on the collector, but you lose completely me when there's a resistor on the emitter, or if someone drops a FET in there. I could never get FETs to do anything useful in a circuit.
