@dirb I moved here a couple of months ago because I was following quite a few people from this instance, and I liked the name, and it said general propose on "the box", so I made it my primary instance.

@dirb I've been told just now by the instance owner that this instance didn't start out as a general purpose one, and is still primarily for a rather different crowd than I belong to. Now it tempts me to move to another instance, because I thought this place was more generic.

If you're not an LGBT nerd or otaku, should you really be on Mastodon at all?

I ask because I just saw a thread full of very NSFW LGBT quotes described as "capturing the mood of Mastodon" and that's most certainly not what I'm here for.

I'm not particularly left-leaning either.

I mostly just drift around purposelessly, belonging to no particular tribe, having no particular goal, and no anchor apart from my nationality.

@Matt5sean3 I tried to start an instance for Norway actually. I more or less spent my first year on Mastodon on my own instance. It was well federated but Norway is a small country, and it's even smaller here on Mastodon, so it never really caught on. I tried getting some people to help me maintain it, but the group didn't function after a while, and the instance is basically dead now.

@jpsa That *was* my viewpoint at first too, but where are the people near the middle of the bell curve? Where are the ordinary folks? Also, where are all the straight women? This place is probably great for dating if you're gay, but not so much if you're straight.

@Jackalgirl It was a thread of LGBT lifestylers sharing NSFW quotes about being gay that they had seen on signs in gay bars or had in their homes, and being very excited about it. More like bonding than fishing. I have absolutely nothing against it, but I'm not keen on being a part of it. It's like being the only straight person in a gay club; a bit awkward, and you won't be taking anybody home that night.

@dr1ft This looks like my bedroom when I was 12, except all the tech is newer.

I keep asking myself if it was a bad idea to quit the job I had earlier, and the answer keeps coming back that the environment there just didn't work for me. I would've been fired if I hadn't quit on my own, because I wasn't functioning properly in that job.

It's almost shocking to me how important having a job gets when you don't have one. It's much tougher for me to be unemployed now, at age 35, than it was when I was 25.

Fucking hell, this situation I'm in pisses me off so royally. I wake up every day and feel pissed off because I don't have a job.

Powerlessness is the worst feeling.

This is a terrible time to be unemployed. Anybody looking to hire now is going to put it off until 2019 since Christmas and New Year is right around the corner.

It wouldn't surprise me if at least some of these things are limitations of ActivityPub. That would mean that anyone seeking to innovate in those areas won't be using ActivityPub for that.
