@lufthans I think I've seen apps that will add a launcher icon if you run make install, and packaged apps where the package manager adds a launcher icon. What I haven't seen much of is the whole "Run at startup" checkbox that so many Windows apps have.

@lufthans Well, yeah. I don't think I've seen a single GUI app ever take advantage of that, though. It's always the person packaging the software who seems to take care of the launcher icons, etc, and the user must always manually add apps to the startup items and there is never a checkbox for it. Not sure why.

It would seem that having a lifelong slow digestion isn't a thing. There's no name for it, but I have never had the recommended number of bowel movements per day, and I've always had to spend longer than most people when I do have them. Opiate pain killers don't merely slow my digestion; they bring it to a complete halt. Everything's just slower for me, and no one can explain why, because it's not supposed to happen.

@sdm And people who seek power don't tend to like fair systems, because the only fair system is one where power is distributed evenly... and frankly, it's difficult to accomplish big things if power and money can't ever be concentrated, so you end up needing some kind of power structure, and boom, you're fucked.

@bamfic What the system is designed for is helping people who comply with it, who are having a bit of tough luck. For example, you have a 9-to-5 job and your employer goes bankrupt, or you get pregnant. Stuff like that. If you don't fit the template though, don't expect much sympathy. You'll just be seen as difficult and told to comply with the rules.

@bamfic It's not a system designed for outsiders. We still have homeless people, for example, and debt slaves, etc.

@bamfic There is the whole thing about universal healthcare and various benefits if you're sick, pregnant or physically unable to work. I mean, if you're in any of those situations or you're starting a family, the Nordic countries are probably the best place for that. However, if you're a single male or just a nonconformist in general, don't expect much help or sympathy.

Man, wouldn't life be great if it wasn't full of horse shit. People wanting shit they're not entitled to. People making untrue shit up. People inventing rules for you to follow to make life easier for them. People giving you the short end of the stick while telling you it's the long end. People claiming that they like their job but actually it's just for the money. The amount of horse shit is just overwhelming.

It's impossible to protect your privacy and receive unemployment benefits if you live in Norway. The government won't pay you any money unless you log how many hours you worked every day of the week and which jobs you have applied for.

In my opinion, that's none of their damned business.

In order to calculate benefits, the only data they need is the number of hours worked per 2 weeks. The other stuff they extract from you is pure unadulterated horse shit.

@bamfic Also, they present themselves as being there to help you with your troubles, but what they actually do is make you go through hoops in order to receive money.

@bamfic There's always been this thing where you can't receive benefits without some degree of humiliation, and there are plenty of examples where people are treated very unfairly. They crop up in the media from time to time. Also, I don't think you can find a single person in Norway who likes NAV (the public unemployment/welfare agency). Yes, they are better than nothing, but no one actually thinks they do a great job.

@bamfic They recently introduced a rule where you can't receive unemployment benefits without submitting logs of your job applications. It wasn't that way before. They've only been collecting data on working hours so far, which is reasonable, since increased working hours ought to reduce your benefits. Not quite sure why they want to know the hours per day, however. Seems to me like an attempt at making the numbers harder to fake.

@bamfic I don't see how that's relevant to what I'm saying. It's still a free market economy, there are still bankers, still norms to conform to, and government bureaucracy still sucks.

It would be nice to be able to stay alive without being beholden to an employer, bank or tax collector.

They never ask you if you want to join the system, and they don't offer you an alternative. Every effort to create such an alternative has been met with fierce resistance and has subsequently failed.

I can't get past the feeling that something is wrong with the world. Most people would probably argue that something is wrong with me. I'm not sure if the distinction matters.

@bamfic @rpcutts I was going to say that Trump might also be remembered as the first in a line of radically different presidents, which is kind of similar to what you're saying, but that's more speculative.
