They could turn me down, and I'm trying very hard to believe that they will, because it's less disappointing if you don't have high expectations. But...

They haven't advertised any positions. They said they were going to anyway, since they are growing, and said it was very convenient that I turned up at the time I did.

They also said that if I do get the position, I will start pretty much immediately, so it looks like I'd be bypassing the usual hiring process since they already know me.

Corp B has some sweet perks. Flexible work hours (10 AM to 3 PM core hours), and the opportunity to work remotely if desired. Great location, easy to get to by public transport. Spotify subscription included. Discounts when buying stocks (they are affiliated with a stock exchange). Cheap vacation house rentals in Spain. Also, they have a big cafeteria that serves good lunches. Also, their office space has big windows and ergonomic chairs. Oh, and nice people and agreeable web stack too.

@sina I'm glad you want to help! You really don't need to.

I'll be heading out for a job interview in 15 minutes, so I won't be around to try things for a few hours. I'll be online later today, though.

@sina I know VMs are a bit sluggish by default, but when you have to wait until the launcher catches up to the fact that you have moved the mouse cursor to a new item...

@sina Ubuntu wouldn't even install on his computer because of some stupid issue with GRUB that Linux Mint didn't suffer from at all, despite being derived from Ubuntu...

@sina I managed to get it to actually get to the desktop again, but it's still terribly sluggish. I just wanted to have a copy of Linux Mint on my system in order to assist my roommate with his new Linux Mint install if needed.

Okay, so enabling nested paging again after the updates worked, but why is everything laggy?

Adding more CPUs to the VM somehow made things WORSE. I think it has gotten as far as loading X now, but it's taking forever to get there. I don't understand what the hell is going on.

Yeah, Linux Mint is running *really* badly in VirtualBox on macOS. I had to disable nested paging and turn video memory up to 128 MB to even get a picture on the screen. I updated Linux Mint to the latest version using the Update Manager and now it just sits there at the boot screen forever. Everything is extremely sluggish as well. Meanwhile, Windows 10 runs flawlessly on the same VM, and the GUI is fairly snappy.

@Eramdam Well, hey, they do their job, and what other cable can transmit 10 Gbps over a distance of 100 meters (if a CAT-6A cable is used)?

@lufthans I got into computers around 1992 and I was 8 years old at the time, so I might sometimes use an old fashioned term or two.

@lufthans On Mac/Windows, you'd typically do it to put stuff in the little icon bar at the edge of the screen. I have maybe 5 things there, but none of them are resource intensive. MacOS X is generally responsive within a couple of seconds of logging in.

@lufthans Or classic Mac OS for that matter. They also had a thing called startup items, because again, Mac OS wasn't a multi-user system back then either.

@lufthans I figured you were either too young to remember the Startup folder in the Start menu, or one of those rare people who have never used Windows as their main OS.

@lufthans That's the same thing, but I thought that would've been obvious. What else could run at startup mean? There used to be a folder in the Windows Start menu named "Startup" and that's where you put items to launch at login. On older Windows versions, there was no login prompt, so it would've launched whenever Windows started up. Similar story on older macOS versions. None of these systems were multi-user, so there was no "login"...
