Compensation is rehearsing and copying behaviors and speech, yeah I don't do that.
Masking is monitoring and ajusting yourself, consciously seeking eye contact, keeping impression in mind. Not so much monitoring, but I do want to make a good impression and I know people like eye contact and physical signs of listening.
Assimilation is both putting on a brave face and finding excuses to avoid interaction. Yeah. I thought I was an extravert until I basically 1) burned out on that and 2) learned and better understood what the term meant.
I need to put myself out there and be outgoing or I'll end up all alone. And I'm pretty ok at it in reasonably sized contexts but it takes loads of energy.

"In autistic people, the total CAT-Q score and the Assimilation score negatively correlate with well-being. The higher your scores on these measures, the lower your well-being tends to be."
aaand that's the one I'm significantly higher on.

Average CAT-Q scores: autistics
Male 109.64 36.81 32.90 39.93Average CAT-Q scores: neurotypicals
Male 96.89 30.06 36.34 30.48Ok, so the camel humps are pretty close to each other and I'm halfway between them, but by category I'm heavily tilted and have two above autistic average. Didn't expect that.
Several questions were really hard though, and I might have thought like "well, I don't *not* do that ...".

Now when I wanted to top up my SkypeOut balance it finally forced me to migrate from Skype username to a live.com account. π

Just *fantastic* promo for #VideoToaster from 1991.
Very 1991. Irreverent, surreal, impossible to say what's parody and what's played straight. Extremely corny, extremely cool. You can really see how someone looked at this and went "ok, that's it, I can make a space station for my TV show with this thing!"
Kiki Stockhammer, who was the spokesperson and hands-on demoed NewTek products at trade fairs and is featured everywhere in this demo, actually had a cameo in Babylon 5 later.
I'm sincerely impressed that you could do so much with this thing out of the box, I had no idea.

I have set up *all the payment methods*:
My normal virtual bank with FPS and MasterCard, BoC Pay, PayMe, nothing worked in this web shop, just instant transaction failure, or showed a supposed QR that was just colored vertical lines, etc. Finally I discovered a UnionPay credit card I had forgotten I had, and that actually worked!
One birthday gift for the kid and a bunch of popcorn on the way to my door.

Used Skype on the phone for the first time in quite some time. It is quite impressive how laggy the UI is and how hot the phone gets.
To show some blue buttons and set up a call. Amazing. Skype 2.0 for X/Linux 16 years ago probably used 1/100 of the resources this mobile app uses.

@Nate :verified: I've felt adjacent for years and definitely recognize some of the habits, preferences and coping mechanisms people are regularly sharing.
Lately I'm suspecting my whole family two generations back may be a little bit on the spectrum and that's why I felt normal growing up and I think I'm just the worst of us at masking maybe because I felt so normal and also I'm the spoiled decade-younger sibling with basically my siblings as extra parents, so I got away with everything, while my parents are A+ at masking because they grew up in the 40s.

@Jamey Sharp My self-analysis hunch is "normie with traits", with which my score agrees, and I find it interesting that my result shows one particular category of traits.
> I'm curious what result you'd get from embrace-autism.com/cat-q/ which attempts to measure masking
Doing that next. =) -

@Sleepy Nerd That's an interpretation that makes sense. But 65 is not written that way. Maybe 50-65 is the Neutral Zone between the Federation and the Empire.
You decide which side you prefer to be which. π

@Hypolite Petovan In one conversation I read the other day someone said "[if someone hands in forms where they wrote clarifying questions about the questions and wrote explaining why they answered a certain way even though it doesn't entirely apply I suggested to the others in my team that we basically don't need to look at the answers]" π -

Super interesting! I don't have very much in terms of stimming or difficulty reading people, but I do feel a difficulty connecting with people who don't have a favorite topic to infodump about and I don't get why people with somewhat similar interests to me aren't as interested to deep dive an know everything. But some of that might be more ADHD-like than ASD-like, possibly. -

Tried the RAADS-R autism self-eval. Interesting! The interpretation is confusing:
25 You are not autistic.
50 Some autistic traits, but likely not autistic (yet some autistic people score as low as 44).
65 The minimum score at which autism is considered.
90 Stronger indications of autism, although non-autistics may score as high.
130 The mean score of autistic people; strong evidence for autism.
160 Very strong evidence for autism.
227 The maximum score autistic people acquired in Ritvoβs seminal paper on the RAADSβR.
[9]240 The maximum possible RAADSβR score
Is "not autistic" 25 and below? I guess, because if it's 25β50, what is below then? I guess "some traits" is 50β65? But what is 25β50 then? Are they supposed to be overlapping so that 0β50 is "not" and 25β65 is "some traits"? -

@hobbsc @Kermode What you're describing is more about having different social personas in different contexts, and I think code-switching is about a context when you and your conversation partner have unencumbered access to more than one language and switch freely mid-sentence. -

@Mans R π€£
@penguin42 Going straight from the fricative unvoiced "f" to the voiced "n" without any gap in between.
In English a bit like the transition from "v" to "n" in "haven't" if you are lucky enough to have an accent that doesn't quite voice the "v" and skips the "e".
Or if you can say "hafnian" and then say it again but skip the "ha".
Or maybe you can say "that's enough now" and capture that transition from "enough" to "now".
