@Kermode Because I used to click through to Masto/Plero/Firefish or search for the post in Firefish so that I could see the alt text before I reposted. -

@bs2 @David Sugar @Martin Owens We had good enough hardware in the 80s for full user involvement in software creation, it's all about tooling. -

@bs2 @David Sugar @Martin Owens 99.99% of software today offers no gradual progression from basic use with defaults via advanced programmatic use to application contributions.
Emacs and spreadsheets are fighting for first place but have different gaps. Spreadsheets have millions of "non-programmers" programming but no gradual path to core maintenance. Emacs has an earlier threshold to elisp but a pretty good path from elisp through plugins to core (I think?).

The correct spelling of "DOMAIN\username" in LDAP search syntax is "DOMAIN\5cusername".
We're lucky one of our example users had valid hex in their username's first two characters and that the byte with this hex value had the high bit set so that it caused a UTF-8 decoding error, because Python package ldap3 "helpfully" treats \ as \ if the following two characters are invalid hex.

@Howard Chu @ Symas Oh that explains it very well. Thanks!
So the terms refer to fundamental choices in the design of the memory cells that are somewhat like the gates, and it's not made of literal gates of the one type or the other.

@Howard Chu @ Symas So, read vs write, interesting.
Is this intrinsic to NOR gates somehow, or is it due to historical path dependence and conventions of how people usually put them together?

FLOSS software is trash. Proprietary software is trash. They are trash in radically different ways.
This is why when someone used to one has a look at the other they always go ugh, how can people live with this.
I'm comfortable on both sides, but I'm far more tolerant of FLOSS nonsense, because I know it's partly my fault for not using my abilities to improve it.

Read vs write, power draw vs perf, leakage vs cost, which way it fails, etc.

Apart from the control circuitry and maybe the datastream looking different, what would be the reason for someone picking one of NAND and NOR over the other for their persistent storage?
I was expecting them to be functionally equivalent and thought the industry had arbitrarily picked NAND over NOR decades ago, but apparently Apple Sllicon uses NOR for their recovery firmware?

Anyway, very cool that #Pleroma and #Feditext store image alt texts from fedi and can roundtrip from save to re-upload. Hopefully they use mutually compatible mappings! -

TIL there is something called IPTC IIM/XMP
> [ . . . ] Almost all the IIM attributes are supported by the Exchangeable image file format (Exif) [ . . . ]
> IIM metadata can be embedded into JPEG/Exif, TIFF, JPEG2000 or Portable Network Graphics formatted image files. [ . . . ]
> IIM's file structure technology has largely been overtaken by the Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP), but the IIM attribute definitions are the basis for the IPTC Core schema for XMP.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPTC_Infβ¦Not sure what this means exactly. Is IIM backwards-compatible with EXIF where they overlap? There's a mapping between them?
> XMP can be used in several file formats such as PDF, JPEG, JPEG 2000, JPEG XR, GIF, PNG, WebP, HTML, TIFF, Adobe Illustrator, PSD, MP3, MP4, Audio Video Interleave, WAV, RF64, Audio Interchange File Format, PostScript, Encapsulated PostScript, and proposed for DjVu. In a typical edited JPEG file, XMP information is typically included alongside Exif and IPTC Information Interchange Model data.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensibβ¦Again I assume this means there is some mapping between the XMP data model and whatever means of adding metadata each of these formats has. And "alongside" ... just means the fields can coexist, or are core XMP fields literally the same mapping as IIM and IIM is to the extent it's possible mapped to existing conventions in the pre-existing namespace for each format?
#IPTC #IMM #XMP
#IPTCIMM #IPTCXMPβ² @vyr@demon.social: @Lunaphied which is IPTC metadata, or the format's equivalent. Apple's ImageIO framework has a metadata abstraction layer that makes it particularly easy.
Mona (another iOS/macOS Fedi client) copied the feature recently, and i'd love to see other clients follow suit.

Right-click being disabled or login forms showing up when you try to drill down into things (possibly because right-click is disabled) are two examples of such anti-features.
The Wayback Machine can turn anti-web web pages slightly more webbified.

I just learned that bathroom walls with a slot where you could just dump your used razor blades inside the wall were totally a thing.
And those bathroom walls are now an excellent source of steel that wasn't exposed to global radiation from nuclear bomb testing.
