@tether @schlink @distelfliege What I wrote in my blog post about #DeleteFacebook, among other things, is that the difference is not only in how Mastodon treats data vs Facebook but also what data it even asks for in the first place - which is not a lot at all. No real names, no dates of birth, relationship statuses, workplaces, schools, geolocations - people dump so much personally identifiably information into Facebook just because it has profile fields that ask for it.

@deadsuperhero @gled It's worth getting some official confirmation but the fediverse does not collect the kinda data GDPR is most concerned about (e.g. real names, addresses, medical records etc etc) and it offers both export and deletion on request already.

The animated video about Mastodon is actually almost done. I'll probably be able to upload it by tonight!

Condolences to the person running mastodon.rocks (which lost its database). I know that sinking feeling as you realize that something went wrong.

Let it be a serious reminder to everyone to have regular backups.

I've lost an entire VPS to Scaleway once, it wasn't even anything I did, their hardware just failed. Not having backups is living on the edge.

I've made a deliberate choice against a quoting feature because it inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours. You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Even when doing it for "good" like ridiculing awful comments, you are giving awful comments more eyeballs that way. No quote toots. Thank's
