Beyond having basic necessities met, everyone deserves the dignity afforded by the ability and autonomy to pursue their own goals and projects

This means money

Maybe you can imagine some world without money—fine, whatever

Just replace "money" with whatever would go in the slot for the thing that affords people the ability to get stuff done on their own terms in your fantasy

If you're not in favour of universal and unconditional:

🍍 Food
🍍 Medical care
🍍 Income

If it's your considered belief that some people literally deserve to die of starvation or exposure or something because they aren't good enough at *making money*:

Homophobia and other forms of hate make a lot more sense when you realize that they're not ideologies or world-views that are meant to be consistent

They're more like methods that are used to reduce competition for spots in the upper class

It is impossible to hold all of Trek canon to be true in-universe simultaneously, as it is internally inconsistent

That is to say, unless you've only seen a small number of episodes, it is not possible to be a fan of Star Trek who has no headcanon

And the choices you make in what headcanon you adopt and what you retcon says a lot about you

Okay so here's one reason why words can matter

We use words not just for their literal meaning in a text, but also for meta-level signalling to others

So if someone uses "faggot" or the n-word as a slur, depending on context, the main thing that they might be doing is testing the waters with regard to whether others will tolerate hate, and depending on the response they get, escalating it
